PAGE 4 - PLA1NDEALER - WEDNESDAY. MARCH 30.1983 "EARL WALSH" So I Hear Those girls from the far north, Pie and Zoe, sent a pack of papers and pictures to use through Mary Supec. It has been fun going through the pack and hope to have the pictures of Snug Harbor and of party goers reproduced before returning them to the girls. In Feb. 1959, the Plaindealer ran a front page picture of Pie, Zoe and their popular bartender, the late Cliff Jensen. The picture dated back to June 1934. The story in the 1934 issue (depression time) listed prices young people of today can't imgaine. Coffee was 29 cents a pound. New cars sold as low as $670. You could buy a new tire for your gas buggy for $4.95. The ladies could fancy up with a shampoo and finger wave for 50 cents. The story noted there was no mention of the amount of your paycheck. Of course, it was all yours. No withholdings. Let me .tell thee those checks were mighty slim. But a dollar was a dollar. We have had some of those Aunt Jenny columns from the Walleye Street Journal before. Besides some humorous columns, this young old girl writes some serious and constructive ideas. They have some clever columnists up that way. I laugh and think "I wish I had sai<j that". Word comes that Father Van- derpool, first pastor of Christ The Kihg Church at Wonder Lake, died. Having a sharp mind, he was placed in other positions of responsibility during his later years in the East. In his younger days, he was some shakes as a tennis player. REVISED: Don't throw the first stone. Somebody might return it to you-- right between the eyes. Just Thinking- Manners, including table manners, should be taught in the home and stressed in school. The same for spelling. Whoever said Johnny can't read should look at his spelling. The Easter Bunny, like Santa Claus, must have a long list of helpers. "Go lay an egg" isn't just idle talk the week before Easter. With so much emphasis on park facilities, we hear a lot of talk about the need for more hoops for basket ball. "I'm never going shopping with a woman again" is also semi-final. Went to a shopping center recently against my better judgment. Seemed to me the shoppers out numbered the packages 100 to 1. I found one clerk who offered me a low stool to rest my aching bones. .. Nice girl. Told her to keep that stool and if I ever got that way again I'd look her up. Saw an ad for a battery powered wheel chair. Now, why can't they rent those out to customers as they enter the doer? They could do a whoppin' business. I waited for weeks anticipating the announcement of the million dollar winner on the Johnny Carson show, then went to sleep in the big chair. I suspect my name wasn't an nounced. Stephen E. Ara das, director of the McHenry County Department of Planning, has received the McHenry County Defenders 1962 Theta award. The award is given each year by the Defenders, an environmental group, to an individual or group having made an outstanding contribution to en vironmental preservation or education in McHenry county. As director of the Planning department, Aradas helped develop the present land use map and the zoning ordinance that implements it. McHenry county is unique in the nation with a 160-acre rural residential zone. Aradas also helped develop LESA (Land Evaluation Site Assessment). This sytem sets standards and criteria by which a particular piece of land can be evaluated as to its value as farmland. LESA is now serving as a national model for other com munities to use in developing their own land preservation ordinances. The award was presented at the annual dinner of the Defenders held in Crystal Lake. Robert Becker, chairman of the Theta Award com mittee, explained that the fact that the some requests for rezoning prime farmland, and that the district and appellate courts have upheld these denials gives real credibility to the new regulations. This encourages other governmental bodies to establish their own farmland preservation standards, Becker DDED. In accepting the award Aradas indicated that it is gratifying to have one's work implemented and even more gratifying to have its im portance recognized. He acknowledged "that the task could not have been completed successfully without the help of many county officials and planning staff members. Aradas has been director of Planning since 1977. Prior to that he held planning positions in Massachusetts and Iowa. In addition to his duties in McHenry county, Aradas is serving presently as president of the Chicago section of the American Planning association. The Theta award, given annually since 1970 by the Defenders, was named after the Greek letter sym bolizing death. It has been adopted by the environmental movement as its sign, warning of the fate awaiting the planet Earth if environmental abuse continues. COVER DESIGNER Just in time for its twentieth an niversary this year, the McHenry County Historical society will "show off" a newly designed brochure. 49n the cover is a very special pen and ink drawing of the cupola and ar chitectural features of the 1870 portion of the society's museum in Union drawn by a local Crystal Lake South high school student, Michelle Milano. • A r m s t r o n g " S e r t a • S o a i y 2 B o y • B r o y h i l l " C o v i n g t o n • S a h m o t > e l INTERSTFREE!
