For several years now, Gary Gray's tennis team has always finished as the brides maid to Crystal Lake South in the Fox Valley Conference and the district. Again last year, the Warriors finished 13-2 overall for third place in the FVC. Gray and his 1983 sqaud is very determine to change that trend. "We always finish second every year. We would like to throw the boquet, instead of catching it," said Gray. "We would like to win the Fox Valley Conference. Eight now I'm kinda hungry and I think the boys are too. The boys that are hungry in par­ ticular are Scott Rhode, Chris Stumbris, Brad Salman, Kevin Burgess and Todd Rhode. All five are returning lettermen. Scott Rhode in particular competed at the state meet last season with Randy Glick, who graduated. The doubles team lost their first round match and the con­ solation match. "All those letterwinners were at state last year watching. It kinda wet their apetite," said Gray. Gray is counting on Scott Rhode to take over his number one singles spot. Gray has also planned for Stumbris to fill the number two singles spot, Burgess one of the number one doubles spots and Todd Rhode number three singles. "We should be running for the conference title with Crystal Lake South. South is the only team that has ever won our conference. Cary-Grove and us should be in it. "South's number one singles champion, Ed Foley, is coming back. Scott Rhode, who will be are number one singles player, worked very pretty hard for us over the summer. South also has half of its doubles teams back. "They (South) always seem to have some freshmen that come in and play varsity. With what they have coming back and what we have coming back, it should be interesting." To contend with South, Gray knows he will have to fill in a few holes. To help fill in those holes will be Steve Stack, senior; Steve Fallon, junior; Brian Nallas, junior and Jeff Bjorn, junior. The Warrior netters begin the the MEADOWS season with a quadrangular at West Campus Saturday. Hoffman Estates, Boylan and Schaumburg will visit for that one. After Easter vacation, the Warriors have five more non- conference matches before opening FVC play against Dundee. "I think we will be ready. We have been conditioning inside and some of the kids have been working on weights." Adams turned in a third place with a jump of 5-feet- 10-inches. Chris Carlson of Central was first with a jump of six-feet even. "If the other Held events come along like that, I'll be very happy with them," added Boland. Boland was asked if he thinks his team could possibly shorten the the large gap between the Tigers and them when the Fox Valley Conference action heats up late in the season. "We're certainly going to make a effort to close it. It's an awfully big gap" But Boland added, he now knows were his team needs to spend the most work to shorten that gap and get ready for the outdoor season. "We showed we need to spend some time on conditioning. We need to work on endurance. This is a good time to find as a judge, very hard. The what they need to next two weeks." Warrior Tennis Team Puts FVG On The Menu There is an old saying in baseball that you're only as strong as you are up the middle. If that holds true, the McHenry Warrior softball team should be strong this season. According to first- year head coach Pat Wirtz, the Warriors are solid at catcher, pitcher and the infield, which would include second base. The only question mark would be the outfield. "We have a top defensive team. The potential is very good," said Wirtz. "Offensively, it remains to be seen. On paper it looks pretty good." "We have a very good infield. Defensively very solid in the infield pbsitions." r- 'Wirtz is hoping to reap in the benefits of the freshmen and sophomore teams that had a combine record of 24-4 last year. Wirtz also has five seniors to lead the team. Last season the varstiy squad fisished 5-9 in the Fox Valley Conference and 6-11 overall. Wirtz pretty much has his lineup figured out. His catcher would be either Cindy .Gaines or Andee Norton, who is injured at the present. The infield consists of Patty Johnson at second base, Karen Karpavicius at shortstop, Val Kilday at third base and Greta Larsen at first base. Wirtz considers his pitchers top- notch. They are Cissy Pinkstaff and Sarah Prust. The outfield will include Kris Keevil, Cindy Kinsala, Renee Mezzano, Prust, Michelle Kennedy and Michelle Regner. Karpavicius, Norton and Pinkstaff are all returning letterwomen. Karpavicius is a two-time all- conference player. "Pitching is always the key in softball," said Wirtz. "Defensively, we're as good as we always been here. Pitching and hitting will have to prove themselves." The Lady Warriors have been able to use a pitching machine in the multi­ purpose room at East Campus twice a week to get some batting in while the weather has been bad. Steve Carby grabbed one second place finish for the Warriors in the two mile run with a time of 10:07.7 and Dennis Shaver picked up a second with a 5.8 time in the 50-yard dash. Shaver also picked up a second in the 220-yard dash with a time of 25.2. The other Warrior second was turned in by Dennis Casey in the 440- yard dash with a time of 59.4. Boland was happy with two other Warrior perfomers, besides the relay team members. One of those in­ dividuals was senior Joe Gattone, who was third in the 440-yard dash with a time of 60.7. Nothing New At Crystal lake Central Tigers Romp, Warriors 2nd At Indoor CRYSTAL LAKE -- Nothing has changed at the Crystal Lake Central Relays last Saturday. As it has happened four times straight before, Crystal Lake Central ran away from the rest of the field and captured the meet title. While McHenry, Crystal Lake South, Woodstock and Dundee were busy just trying to get the kinks out (being their first meet of the season), the Tigers ran away like a well oiled machine. "As I mentioned before, I was a little concerned with the relay teams. I thought the relay teams ran real well today." The Warrior relay teams picked up two seconds, two thirds and one fourth. The two seconds came from the two mile relay and the four lap relay. The two mile relay team of Marty Koleno, Jeff Pankiewicz, Terry Harth and Brian Wright finished behind the Crystal Lake South team, 8:52.6 to 9:02.1. Central totaled up ill points to second place finisher McHenry, who scored 46. The Gators were right behind the Warriors with 38% points, Woodstock scored 32 and Dundee finished with 6%. The Tigers captured firsts in 13 of the 15 events. The Warrior's two thirds came in frosh four lap relay and the one mile relay. The 880 relay team picked up the fourth. "The four lap relay team ran ex­ tremely well and«the mile relay ran well too," said Boland.
