The Hurricanes look to be a team that will not hit with much power, but which will move the ball around, Garvey said. "Meceli hit in the high ,300's last year and Fortin was the top hitter on the sophomore squad so we're hoping for good things out of them," he said. "Mass and Truckenbrod were also good hitters for the sophomores. For now, however, the Hurricanes are limited to what they can do. "We've been working on defense and we've had many chalk talks on what we want to do once we get outside, but for now it's just sit and wait for the weather," Garvey said. Garvey said he looks for Montini to be strong in the West Suburban Catholic Conference this year. "Harvard also has a good pitcher in Mark Gullickson so they should be tough. Hurricane Nine Difficult To Describe SHAW MEDIA NEWS SERVICE SAM NATROP WOODSTOCK -- When asked about his team's prospects for the upcoming season, Marian Baseball Coach Mike Garvey is a man of few words. Every time he attempts to describe something about the team, he uses a qualifier ... "pretty good" "probably will" "should be strong." |9rhe reason for the lack of certainty in his remarks is a simple fact of pre season baseball practice: you can't tell much about your team's true ability inside the gym. "It's really frustrating. It's hard to judge without any scrimmages," Garvey said in reference to assessing his team for the upcoming season. He said since Marian does not have an indoor letting cage, his team has not been getting practice it needs. He added his team had a couple of out door practices earlier this month, but it was too early to tell much. "One thing does stick out and that is the defense looks better this year at this point than it did last year at this point," Garvey said. Three lettermen return for Garvey this season as John Miceli, an all- county rightfielder last year, Steve Garrelts and Mike Borman will be counted on to provide leadership for the Hurricanes. They are the only letter winners from last year's squad which was 2-11. "That record makes us lode like we stunk," Garvey said. "But nine of those 11 losses, were by one or two runs so we weren't that bad." v Garvey said the keys to his year's team will be its ability to score runs and solid defense. "We are going to have to run. We're going to have to move people along as much as we can," the Hurricane coach said. "We just have to hope we get the sticks (hitting) going to get them on. We'll have to not strike out to give outselves a chance to do that. "Our defense will then have to hold on for us," he continued. "Our pit chers most likely won't be able to throw the ball by everybody so if they can keep the ball low in the strike zone and not give up the golpher balls, we'll be OK. "We've got the kids who can play well in the outfield. They can really go get the ball," Garvey said. "Our pitchers will be hit, it's just a matter of what we do with the ball once it's in play." Only one of his top five pitchers will be a senior on the junior-oriented team. Senior Mark Thompson joins four underclassmen in the starting rotation which also includes Darren Fortin, Gerrelts, Jim Mass and Jeff Kruse. Only Gerrelts, returns from last year's pitching corps. Garvey said many of the other positions in the starting lineup are still undecided. And although most positions are being challenged by two or three players, "the most important one is still wide open," Garvey said, "Catcher." The only thing Garvey knows for sure about his catcher is he will be a junior. The job is being fought for by Jim Marinis and Rich Hoover. "You can have a super team, but if your catcher is weak you're in trouble," Garvey said. "We're still looking for the right person." The rest of the infield will consist of Fortin, Mass, Thompson, Gerrelts, PAGE 7 - PLAIN DEALER - WEDNESDAY.
