STAFF PHOTOS -- WAYNE GAYLORI) The McHenry Plaindealer 6ports McHenry Proposal Gaining State Support The Fox Valley Conference is earning a little recognition these days -- and all I can say is, it's about time. A proposal before the IHSA in regards to combining the boys and girls state track meet began at McHenry High School. The conference athletic directors sent out a questionaire to about 300 high schools, asking the principals their thoughts on such an idea. Taking into consideration many schools such as McHenry have combined their coaching staffs and in these economic times it would save expenses traveling to wherever they would hold the state meet. After the responses were received back, about 80 percent responded favorably. Principal Greg Johnson and Athletic Director Joe Schlendee drafted a proposal and sent it to the IHSA fdt consideration. This proposal is now being considered at this time, and some time in the nearTuture will be voted on by the member principles in the state. It sounds like an excellent idea, killing two birds with one stone as they say. The district would be held the same day and state meet the same day if this plan would take affect. This should make coaches happy, principals looking at expenses would be delighted, and fans would be able to see the best in the state -- boys and girls. Let's hope the guys in the white hats in Bloomington take to this idea. ******** Another bouquet for the Fox Valley. Gaungrich has taken his team to the finals of the class A six times in the past eight years, what is surprising is that he has returning an all-state player at 6-foot-6 and a 7-foot player also returning. You can bet Havana will have a lot of applications this spring to fill the coaching position. On a wishful thinking note, wouldn't it be nice if those two returning Havana players would transfer to Warrior Land next fall? It would be one of the few times Ludwig would have to look up at one of his players. ******* We promised you some sport stories, but the weatherman won't cooperate. This rain has just got to go. A nice winter, but a poor spring if that is what we can call it. Both the softball and baseball and softball title races in the Fox Valley Conference should •. be quite interesting this spring. Dundee won v f/ Vboth last season as the girls finished with an ll- £ record and Jerry Curtwright's boys going ' i^Meated ytth a 14-0 record. Dundee's Warrior sophomores only lost two, both to Dundee, and could give Pat Wirtz some help. On the boys side, Central sophomores had s^n 11-3 record to go along with the varsity's 8-6. However, Dundee was right behind with a 9-5 record, and this should make them tough. Conference play will commence in a couple of weeks, if the monsoon season is ended. April Showers Soak Out Spring Openers April showers do bring May flowers, but it's also doing a good job washing out a whole week of high school sporting activity. Very few high school action has got past the raindrops. All of the outdoor McHenry and Johnsburg teams have big zeros under the win and loss marks in the early going. With rainouts to contend with, some of the coaches are praying for sunshine and hoping to re-schedule those contests. The McHenry tennis team is leading in the rainout department with two tennis matches down the drain. A quadrangular with Hoffman Esates, Boylan and Schaumburg was rained out on Saturday and match with Elgin Larkin was cancelled Tuesday. "We've been chopping at the bit. We're ready to go," said Coach Gary Gray. "The big thing now is get them re-scheduled. But we are limited to what we can do. In past rainouts with Larkin, we haven't re-scheduled.. "If we can't get one them to re-schedule, we'll have to find somebody in the area that would be interested and get them in." While two tennis matches have been soaked, Sport Talk Mike Lamb Sports Editor finding a dry time to practice has also been a problem for Gray. "We practice three hours yesterday morning. And we also do a little conditioning inside." In another sport, the Chicago Cubs are not the only Chicago area team having problems getting a opener in. Brian Wilson's baseball squad had their opening game with Libertyville at McCracken Field postponed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The rain hasn't done anything for McGf^cken Field and Wilson has been busy trying to keep it in good shape for the opener, whatever it cranes. "The temperatures doesn't allow anything to dry," said Wilson. "Its a pretty good field. It can handle some moisture. "There was a lot of moisture from the weekend. The infield was playable. There was some standing water in the outfield. But it can take as much water as any field. The only bad thing about our field is that out outfield is low in spots." Wilson is hoping this spring won't end up as some previous springs when the first half of the season was rained opt. When that happens, the Fox Valley plays reverse schedules. That sometimes can be a disadvantage according to Wilson. Wilson has spent a lot time and energy in the past and this season keeping the field in shape. Wilson pointed out if the other schools in the conference would do the same it would erase some of the problems of poor field conditions. "I have spent much of my Easter vacation working on the field, doing a lot of the physical work. I already had the pickup truck out their hauling dirt filling in the low spots." Despite the poor weather, Wilson and his crew is ready. "We are ready for a ball game. You can only practice for so long. I was ready. You have to play a game to find out what you got." (Continued on pago 7) 16-Inch Youth And Women's Meeting It's that time of the year again when the City of McHenry Department of Parks and Recreation will be having an organized meeting for the youth 16-inch softball league. This year a women's 12- inch softball league will be added and their organization meeting will be held at the same time. This meeting will be held <» Tpesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. at McHenry City Hall. All teams planning on playing in 1963 must attend this meeting to get information on registration, rules, fees and other roster forms. This league is open to McHenry area teams only.
