Sport Talk (Continued from pago 6) Only one track meet, so far, has been postponed. The McHenry and Johnsburg boys sauads were to square off last Thursday, but rain and cold temperatures spoiled that contest. Warrior Coach Dan Boland is interested in re-scheduling the contest, but hasn't met with his Johnsburg counterpart to discuss the possibility. Also on Thursday, the McHenry girls squad was to be at Grant. That was also cancelled. The meet was rescheduled for Thursday. "We were out today, but we've been inside mainly," said Boland. We have been working on weights. We just kinda been bundling up and get out as much we can. "They (his girls and boys squads) are ready for a meet. You can only practice for so long, before they start to get a little antsy. I'm getting tired sitting around, just like the kids." Ben Beck, coach of the Skyhawk squad, pointed out that the Johnsburg track wasn't in the best shape for the meet "Snow has been on our track since last week. It really set us back. But I'm sure we are in no different shape then anybody else. "It's a long time being inside and we are real anxious for nice weather. We are now looking for a April 12 opener (at Crown with Lake Zurich)." ******* Bad news from Cleveland. Johnsburg resident Jack Perconte didn't make the Indian major league squad. He was sent down to the Indian triple A team. Perconte was one of the guests of last January's Old Timers Banquet at Johnsburg's Community Club. Perconte noted then that he was in a position were might not make tne big club. Last season, Perconte hit .237 as a utility infielder with the Indians. ******* This is the time every sportswriter in the nation act like fortune tellers for the upcoming baseball season. I might as well act as a prophet as well. I have nothing to lose, nobody remembers your picks at the end of the season anyways. The American League champion Milwaukee Brewers should repeat in the American League East. But not without a battle from the Yankees. New York, with Billy back and the addition of Don Baylor has improved the club tremendously. With such up and coming teams as Baltimore, Boston, Detroit and Cleveland, the American League East will be the toughest division in baseball. American League East: Milwaukee, New York, Detroit, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland and Toronto. Area Chicago White Sox fans are proclaiming 1983 their year. I disagree -- too many question marks. They have the pitching to do the job, but a few infield weakness could hinder chances. Even without Baylor, California should repeat as West champions. American League West: California, Kansas City, Chicago, Texas, Seattle, Oakland, Minnesota. I can't see St. Louis failing to repeat in the National League East. But look out for the Cubs. Pitching could be a major problem, but they have the power hitters. A threesome of Leon Durham, Aon Cey and Bill Buckner should scare any pitcher. National League East: St. Louis, Montreal, Philadelphia, Chicago, Pittsburg, New York. Another dogfight will develop for the top spot in the National West. Atlanta, San Franisco, San Diego and maybe Los Angeles will create some excitement. National League West: Atlanta, San Franisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Houston and Cincinatti. Brewers and Cardinals should repeat as League champions for another beer World Series. • PAGE 7 PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 8,198.1 ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who won the Super Bowl XVII? 2. I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Horo'a a truo story about what happened ono day to tho groat golfor Bobby Jones -- and, this is a story that illustrates tho roal moaning of tho word "sportsmanship"... Jonos was playing in tho National Opon of 1925 at Worcostor...His ball wont into tho rough, and thon ac cidentally movod very slightly when Jones's club touched a nearby blade of grass...Repor ters later said that NOBODY saw the ball move.. Jones, how ever, asked that he be penalized a stroke...Everyone tried to talk him out of taking the penalty because no one saw the ball move...But Jones insisted and as it turned out, that stroke cost him the title that year...Someone later asked Jones why he'd done it...He said, "That's the only way to play the game"...Is there a better definition of spor tsmanship than that? Brought to you by Phil Oeffling What was the longest fight on record?...Most boxing records show that the longest glove fight ever was between Andy Bowen and Jack Burke in New Orleans in 1893...Their bout lasted 110 rounds, or 7 hours and 19 minutes!...It ended as a draw when niether man could continue.
