Big Garage Sale Time Is Coming Yes, it's that time again to start cleaning out your closets, basements, attics, and garages in anticipation of McHenry Shores' annual spring .garage sale. The dates for this year's sale will be Friday and Saturday May 20-21. Once again, Johann Bartel will be coordinating the event, picking up . your permit, and placing the ad in the paper. If you would like to sign up, or would like more information, you can reach Johann at 385-0286. We will be regularly reminding you about the garage sale here in the column, but don't wait, call early, and remember to let your neighbors know, for those who might not have seen it here. There will be a flyer sent out shortly, to reach as many homes in the Shores as possible that might be interested in signing up. Sunny Days ahead, I hope! WELCOME TO SOGGY SPRING! Let's brighten these dreary days with some sunny April birthdays! One of my favorite "fellas" little Teddy Nott, will be turning two on April 25. Happy Birthday to a real cutie! And Angela Orin joins the 'teenager set as she turns 13 tomorrow, April 14. Back in February we missed remembering the birthday of Dottie Dobbertin, who turned 21 on Feb. 10. And in March, another Hilltop resident, Mrs. Van Petegham had a very special birthday, celebrating her eightieth on March 16. May God Bless you, and bring you many more beautiful days ahead! RECUPERATING Another Dobbertin gal, dawn, is recuperating from recent knee surgery. We hear she's doing super, and hope she'll be dancing around in no time! LOCAL BOOSTER Good friend Bob Gorniak from Kinley, has been named chairman of the upcoming McHenry Warriors Booster Club Pancake Breakfast, to be held Sunday April 17, from 8 a.m. to noon, at East campus. Mark it on your calendar not to forget this good breakfast, and to see Bob flipping those hotcakes! MICROWAVE OVEN The recent trend toward health awareness has led to an increased interest between diet and health. Many nutritionists advise that special health foods and expensive vitamin- mineral supplements are not necessary for most people. They recommend choosing a variety of foods from each of the four food groups as the key to a healthy diet. Vegetables are a valuable and sometimes overlooked source of important vitamins such as A and C. as well as fiber. Dark green vegetables also contribute riboflavin, folacin, iron and magnesium. According to home ecnomists preparation of vegetables in a microwave oven helps preserve some nutrients as well as or better than conventional cooking methods. Because of quicker cooking times and the use of less water in cooking, vitamins and minerals are better preserved. Using your microwave oven and your neighbhorhood supermarket you can easily in corporate good nutrition into your family's daily meals. Dr. Sharon Freagon, assistant professor of Special Education at Northern Illinois university, will be the guest speaker for the Southeast Regional Parent Organization (SERPO of SEDOM) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at the SEDOM center in Woodstock. She will speak on "School and Community Integration of severely Handicapped Students". Dr. Freagon will discuss her experiences with the DeKalb County Special Education association and their joint effort to provide successful school and com munity integration for all severely handicapped students residing in DeKalb county. During her presentation, she will emphasize the benefits of strategic v placement of severely handicapped students in self-contained classrooms in age-appropriate schools that are attended by non-handicapped students where they and their teachers can interact throughout the school day. Prior to coming to NIU, Dr. Freagon was executive director of a not-for-profit organization that de institutionalized 51 severely and profoundly handicapped youngsters into group homes of six or less and accomplished a public . school education for the residents prior to Public Law 94-142. According to Jane Kerley, president, the audience will be invited to participate in a discussion with Dr. Freagon and a special response panel. Members of the panel will include John Fleshman, SEDOM principal; Bob Blazier, superintendent of District 47; Rick Bemotas, principal N.J. high, Denise Vitale, teacher from Spring Hill school in Roselle; Eunice Kurtz, SEDOM teacher ; Cathy Pidak, SEDOM speech therapist; and Jane Washnok, parent. The SERPO Special Event com- Frame for Landscape Green goes with grass like red goes with rose and blue with violets. It is good to reemphasize the function of the green lawn as a component of the landscape. Actually, in a way, it's a little deflating to realize that the lawn is only the background for other landscape features such as shrubs, flowers and architectural structures. Lawns have been described as the frame for the picture. We hardly no tice the frame unless its is out of place or inappropriate for the type of picture. Lawns should be so uniform that they are inconspicuous. The trouble is they are so attractive in that state that they can't help but be noticed.
