Members of the Bar associations of SOIL TEST ADVISED A soil test is made to determine the quality of lawn, garden and field soil as measured by several chemical fac tors that effect plant growth. These include PH or ac id i ty l eve l , nutrient content, soluble sa l t l eve l s and estimations of amounts of sand, silt, clay and organic matter in the soil. Heavy metals may be determined in some soils where past con tamination from a var ie ty o f d i f f erent . sources is considered likely. Soil testing provides the gardener with the information needed to make the proper ap plication of lime and fertilizer. With cost of lime and fertilizer in creasing each year, it becomes ever more important to use these materials to adequately meet plant needs without waste. When over ap plications of fertilizer are made, plants fail to produce as well and, in addition, excess plant nutrients are ac cumulated as soluble salts or are washed away into the ground water. From there they may end up as a form of pollution in low land or pond areas. Soil pH influences the availability of plant nutrients. Thus, in order not to watte fertilizer fir the nutritive value of organic composts and mulches the proper level of soil sweetness must be maintained. Other soil test measures such as estimates of texture and organic matter aid in the identification of soil air-water relationships. With water shortages becoming more com mon across the country, it is even more im portant, now, to know how to use water without waste and still meet plant needs. Heavy metal deter minat ions are im portant to identify soils that have at some time become contaminated or polluted. Where heavy metal con centrations are high, crops should not be produced for human consumption. For details on how to obtain a soil test, wherever you may live, contact your county or district Cooperative Extension Agricultural Agent. This agent represents U .S . Department o f Agriculture, State Land Grant University and local interests in how to grow plants that enhance our en vironment. The office number is in the phone directory. Call today. I In Preparedness Exercise j Know , V*,; THE Weather What does smoke tell us about the coming weather? Does soot sometimes play the role of weather fore caster? Both smoke and soot sometimes indicate the na ture of approaching weather. Most often they tell of ap proaching weather. Most often they tell of approaching rain or bad weather. Smoke that curls downward from a s m o k e s t a c k i n d i c a t e s unstable weather, probably rain or even a storm. Soot which falls down a chimney into a fireplace be low indicates a falling baro meter, and the approach of rain. Smoke that rises steadily, not necessarily vertically, indicates good weather ahead. Vertical smoke columns reveal a lack of wind, or frontal movement; this sign could mean that no weather change is imminent for a day or so in winter. Through summer, the value of a vertical smoke column as a weather indicator is highly questionable. Navy Operations Specialist 3rd Class Carl A. Anderhub, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl A.
