A powerful (Medea' Dame Judith Anderson, as the nurse, and Zoe Caldwell, as Medea, co-star in the television adaptation of Euripides' trage dy "Medea," airing Wednesday, April 20 on PBS as part of the "Kennedy Center Tonight" series. (Please check local listings for time.) "Medea" depicts the ultimate revenge of a passionate woman, scorned by fjer ambitious husband bent on marrying his way to new power and riches. Her love for her husband turns to hatred and horrible revenge, their two children becoming the victims of her rage. When Euripides created the original "Medea" in 431 B.C., it was the first time in Greek theater that the true feelings and emotions of a woman were portrayed. Medea had magical powers, yet she spoke for women whose passions could boil into horrendous rage when tormented and rendered powerless by the men they have loved. The play is a dynamic example of interest in the heart of a woman, a subject generally ignored by Athenian theater of that day. Mark Cullingham directed; Mary Rawson is producer and Dale Bell is executive producer with Barry Weissler. © 1M3 Compulog
