PACifc, 1 - f L.AlfrUt.AL.t.ix - ^ KIDAY, APHII. 15. IMH:» Wheeler To Fulfill Life Long Ambition On Moiulny a McHenry coach will realize a life long ambition. Jim Wheeler, assistant track coach, will run in the Boston Marathon. A native of Zion (North Suburban conference champion), Jim is a graduate of Western Illinois University (I am familiar with a graduate of that school). Jim qualified last year for the outstanding event, and for the past year has been training for the event. In talking with Jim, he remarked, "I have been on a diet alternating between carbohydrates and proteins. I have run many many miles to build up my endurance." I asked him how many will run in the race. "There will be at least 10,000 and maybe more in the race," said Wheeler. This is the year of the World's Championship, and runners from all over the globe will participate. Jim, who finished 38th in the Chicago Marathon last summer, doesn't expect to finish that high with all the competition, but does feel he will finish in a respectful position. We, along with all Warrior fans, wish the genial coach the very best, and hope we see him smiling on television as he crosses the finish line in a blaze of glory. We finally got some good weather, and Warrior teams were able to participate in some events. Brian Wilson's baseball team has split in two games, defeating Elgin Larkin and losing to Llbertyville. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors defeated Johnsburg 7-1 in softball. Gary Gray's tennis team a 5-0 victor over Grant and the girls track team lost at Crystal Lake South and Central in their second meet of the season. The thinclads of Dan Boland defeated Round Lake 78-67. The meet scheduled for McHenry, was transfered to Round Lake and their all- On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt weather track. It was a very cold evening at Round Lake (I wore a winter coat and gloves) and really appreciated the members of both teams running and competing in their track uniforms. Not that anyone cares, but Round Lake School has an excellent cinder track. But you must realize it is the only cinder track in this part of the state. A brief shower in McHenry will cancel a track meet. So you fans can plan for some events for next year, Allili'tic Director Joe ScKlender has informed me the Warriors will be playing two new opponents in football next season. The Warriors open the season at Morton East in Cicero, which has an enrollment of 2800. In place of Dundee, which will close, the Warriors will play a state contender in Ridgewood of Norridge, a suburb of Chicago. No patsy's on this schedule. In basketball, the Warrior's pick up some more tough competition. On the schedule for next season is old rival Grant of Fox Lake, along with Grayslake of the same Northwest Suburban Conference. Waukegan West will be at Buckner Gym, Moe Tharp's Fremd Vikings will again be on the schedule. Class A power Immaculate Conception of Elmhurst will host the Warriors, and which the gym should be hanging from the rafters. Former Warrior great, and I mean great, Paul Morenz will bring his Deerfield squad to his home town for a game. ***** *** A late report, the Warriors water polo team of Mike Shanahan defeated his old alma mater Riverside-Brookfield 11-8. Evanston, Highland Park, LaGrange and Riverside Brookfield have fell before the Water Warriors. All these teams are state rated. The Water Warriors must be doing something right these days." Zion Beats Badminton Team Hawk Spring Teams Move Into Full Swing BARB ANSELL The lady Wariors badminton team took a stinging from the Zion Benton ZeeBees as they were shutout 6-0, in the first match following the Easter break. The loss dropped the Warriors' overall record to a disappointing 2-5. Badminton coach Jim Popovich was at a loss at pin-pointing reasons for the loss, but felt that the lack of practices could have contributed to the Warriors problems. In the singles matches, McHenry's number one singles player Donna Hoch lost to Deb Taulu 11--2,11--5. Jill Kuhns, number two singles, fell to Beth Wisniewski 11-0,11-3. It was a tight match for Lynne Zurblis, number three singles, lost a chance to send her match into a tie-breaking game when Zion's Amy Sutton came from behind to edge out Zurblis 11-8, n-3. Popovich felt Kuhns had difficulty Pancake Breakfast McHenry Warriors Booster Club is spon soring a pancake break fast and bake sale on Sunday at the East Campus Cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door. adjusting to her opponent's serves. "Jill started out standing too far back to return the serves. But although the scores did not reflect the change, Jill did warm up to play more com petitively." The number one doubles team of Stephanie Hankins and Valerie Boeldt lost a close match to Marion Hughes and Kris Fulkerson 17-15, 15-10. At number two doubles Sherri Cristy and Patti Henderson were downed by Theresa Martinelli and Laurie Witt 15- 4, 15-6. And at number three doubles, Marge Dixon and Bobbie Orin were dumped by Nina Robinson and Mary Watson 15-7, 15-1. Popovich said the Warrior team will face a struggle when they up against Lake Forest late this week. Lake Forest cut apart McHenry in their invitational last month. Today the Lady Warriors will take on Elgin Larkin at home. JOHNSBURG - With spring getting into full swing the Johnsburg Skyhawk athletes step into sports action in track, softball, baseball, and tennis. Most of Skyhawk coaches have felt the effects of the poor weather, which has kept their athletes indoors and kept them from being as ready as they could have been for their season openers. But they agree that this may help keep them in the same boat with their new competitors from the Northwest Suburban Conference. GIRLS TRACK "I'm excited about being the head coach of the girls track team," said Skyhawk coach Bill Hurckes. "This spring's program will really be a building one. There are 25 hard working, competitive athletes, which makes for the largest girls track team in Johnsburg's history." Hurckes, who joined Johnsburg's teaching staff last fall, is finding his first head coaching position a challenge. "For me, it will be a learning process in dealing with the girls," said Hurckes. "I must learn their per sonalities, tem peraments and moods to really help them." Hurckes says his goals for the team in clude: winning half of their meets and placing in the top half of every invitational. But he said participation and in dividual achievement come first. "I want the girls to know that success is more than placing first or second," emphasizes Hurckes, "I want them to feel a sense of success in bettering their time from week-to-week." The Skyhawks team composed mainly of frosh-soph and juniors, also includes two seniors. Headlining the list is Bridget Thorn, who holds the school record for hurdling. BOYSTRACKS The Skyhawk boys track team also finds itself with an expanded roster over previous years. New head coach Ben Beck feels the in crease is a good base for their growing program. "With so many young athletes we have a very green team," said Beck, "But for the first time we have enough kids to run a frosh-soph and varsity team, and that's very positive." Beck feels the team will still have their work cut out for them in conference action, despite their 35 man roster. "We have several individuals who will be able to place very high, but still not enough members to consistently fill the lower places, which will Tigers To Hold Tryouts The Johnsburg Tijgers will continue to hold tryouts Saturday and Sunday. The Tryouts will be held at the diamond behind the Johnsburg Community Club at 10:30 a.m. For more information on the Tiger tryouts, call Jim Herman at 385-3205. The National Association of Leagues offers all types of non- " professional teams for players of all ages, and currently boasts a mem bership of over 3,000 in 46 states and territories of the United States. That is added with an addtitional 150 in . eight foriegn countries. Only teams affiliated with the NBC are elgible to participate in its' sanc tioned tournaments. This year's 49th annual National Tournament is scheduled for Aug. 1 through Aug. 15 in Wichita's Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Dean Stavrakas of Chicago, is NBC's 1983 state commissioner and will be announcing plans for his 1983 Illinois state NBC tournament in the very near future. The winner ad vances automatically to the national tournament. McHenry Defeat L.A. LOS ANGELES -- The McHenry Polo team defeated Los Angeles 11-9 in a showdown at the Equestarian Centre in the Equi Dome March 29. McHenry's Bill Tauber was the polo match top scorer with seven goals. Kevin Ittig of Woodstock and Dick Tauber of McHenry were the other McHenry members. Liz Gallagher was the team doctor and trainer. The McHenry polo team will be competing this summer at the Glendale Heights Polo Club and will also appear at the Oakwood Polo Club. hurt our overall team showing." The Skyhawk string includes three current record holders. Senior Jay Jackson, who holds the record for both the one and two mile runs, senior John Payne, for the pole vault, and is adaptable enough to fill- in many spots on the team. And junior Brian Suidak who holds the records for shot put and discus. BOYS TENNIS The boys Skyhawk tennis team hopes to continue their strong trend of dominating the conference spots, facing their new conference opponents. Skyhawk tennis coach Denny Spraetz took last year's team with a 9-4 record to the Shark championship, and also sent number one singles player Dan Kiernan down state. "I have a good feeling about this team," said Spraetz. "This is the Every book In print is as close as your phone at: strongest team in five years and the one with the most depth." Spraetz says he feels lucky to not only have a good number one singles player, but a strong number two singles player too. This year Spraetz hopes to win in the new conference "My goals, not only include winning 75 percent of our matches, but I think we can finish in the top three places in the Northwest Suburban Conference and send more than one person down state." Spraetz believes that not only does Kiernan have a shot at state, but also Paul Hendrixson, at number two singles. The number one doubles spot shows strength with returning varsity player John Hendrixson who teamed up with Bob (Dooley) Stanell to capture last year's Shark conference doubles championship. ind Reserve Yourself a Tee Time!
