PAGE 17 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 22.1983 County Viet Now Vets Organize The first meeting of Viet Now, an organization of veterans who served in Vietnam, will be held April 25, at 7:30 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran church of Woodstock. It is designed to introduce Vietnam veterans to the organization, which has only recently come into existence. Present to address the group will be Congressman Philip Crane and Senator Jack Schaffer. Also present will be Mike Lenker, a former prisoner of war from Illinois. Time will be available for everyone^ in attendance to talk with one of the members and have questions an swered. Organizers will also have available a book which shows when and where Agent Orange and other chemicals were sprayed. Pamphlets on "delayed stress" and other in formation will be available. Viet Now is an organization set up so that veterans can help other veterans. The organization is founded on the premise that Vietnam veterans are able to understand and help each other with their problems. The organization is, first of all, a service to veterans. Services such as rap groups, Agent Orange in formation, Agent Orange screening. V.A. benefits explanation, professional therapy and many other important services are available through Viet Now. Those who know one or two other veterans are asked to call them and come to the meeting together. If there are questions, call Dave at 338-3984 or Dennis at 344-0049 after 4 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. APPLE FOR THE TEACHER-Principal William Dodds of East campus high school presents traditional "apple for the teacher" to Mary Lou Osterman, physical education instructor at the school. The observance was held district-wide with the presentation of apples to all teachers on National Teachers' Day, Wednesday, April 20. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Wonder Lake Legion Ladies Will Sell Poppies May 14 On May 14, the crepe paper poppy will be offered to the public by the American Legion auxiliary. This reminder of the sacrifice of countless thousands in four wars is an annual event undertaken by the members of Unit 1169 in Wonder Lake. Volunteers from the unit will once again take part in this nation-wide program in memory of the citizen soldiers who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. Funds collected on Poppy day are used to assist the needy veteran and his family. It is a self-help program, for the auxiliaries familiar red paper poppy is hand made in poppy shops run by auxiliary volunteers. In these shops, disabled and hospitalized veterans make the poppies by hand, petal by petal. It is part of a physical v^ifciwiSr veterans. TThe^pi^i^ are purchased from the shop by the auxiliary and offered to the public, not at a price, but for a contribution - a few cents to say America remembers. This memorial flower was adopted by the American Legion auxiliary in 1920 and since that time, programs have been conducted throughout the United States each year. Contributions made on Poppy day are used by the local unit to aid needv veterans and their families in the community and in hospitals throughout the state. All proceeds are channeled directly into rehabilitation and welfare work for children and youth. Auxiliary members from Wonder Lake will ask the public to pause for a moment, pin on a poppy, and wear it with pride, remembering the civilian who took an oath to serve his country v&rtdv&ave his life so that America would survive today. The Department of Conservation is expanding its Rent-A-Camp program by increasing the number of state sites offering the 'tailor-made cam ping' plan, scheduled to begin its second year May 13. Charles Tam- minga, DOC. associate director and head of the Department's Bureau of Lands and historic Sites, said 15 state parks - 11 more than last year - will offer ready-made, fully-equipped campsites at a rental charge above the regular fees. This season, in addition to the four- cot wall tents utilized last year, 14 by 14-foot, eight-cot tents for large families will be provided at several sites, Tamminga reported. As in 1982, users will find at each campsite a tent, cots, charcoal grill, battery-powered camp light, fire extinguisher, broom and trashpan, fire ring, picnic table and trash sliiiii i \ i mi. 5ouTft or «• BANQUETS WELCOMED! LOCAL WILDLIFE HAVEN As our communities expand, ftritory for wildlife decreases. So it's up to us to provide the essentials of life--food, shelter, and water--to our feral friends in our own backyards. The greater variety of food available, the greater variety of wildlife you will attract. The most popular creatures seem to be the many types of birds, which can be brought into your yard with sunflower seeds, suet, peanut butter, and fruit. Evergreen windbreaks on the northern, western, and eastern sides of your home will serve double duty: as a heating fuel energy saver in the winter for you -- and as nesting cover for birds. Thorny plants will help keep predators, cats and raccoons, out of your yard. Your landscaping, too, can provide food as well as shelter. If, for example, you would like to bring hummingbirds into your yard, plant red tubular flowers. Hummingbirds will return the favor by helping to pollinate the flowers in the spring as they feed on the nectar. Any yard of any size can become a wildlife haven in miniature with good planning and modest cost. The American Association of Nurserymen recommends that you ask your local retail nursery for details. tha Center for UFO Studies 27, i-purpose positively S MCHENRY COUNTY COLLEGE Route 14 & Lucas Road Crystal Lake, IL 4553700 HARDWARE STORES More than a name...it's our way of doing business JhiSn/aBm r*rw*mmm W I ADDING® Money Savers Expand Rent-Camp Program barrel. All of the tents have canvas flows and are placed on wooden platforms for protection against in clement weather and to increase air circulation. Although reservations are not required, they are recommended. This program is intended as a low- cost introduction to camping for those who have not yet tried it, and as a service to experienced campers who do not own camping gear or cannot easily transport it, Tamminga said. Expansion has been made possible through the assistance of several corporations. Reservation forms or further in formation on the program may be acquired at the site or by writing to the Conservation department's Springfield office, in care of Rent-A- Camp Program, 524 South Second St., Springfield, 111., 62706.
