An old adage states "an apple a day keeps the doctor away". There is more truth than fiction in that thought as it points out that eating right promotes good health. Seniors, as evaluation of their diets show, generally eat a poor diet. The reasons for this problem include chronic illness, limited special diets, inadequate dentures, no appetite; not to mention that it's no fun to eat alone. Life can take on new meaning if seniors attend a Meet and Eat site and eat a well-balanced meal, cooked with good food and served in a pleasant atmosphere with people who care present. All this is possible through the McHenry County Senior Citizens Nutrition council, which is made up of volunteers pictured above, who have expertise in the field of nutrition, education and food service. During March, 5,390 meals were served at the seven Meet and Eat sites in McHenry county. Daily meal average was 232 served with the raw cost of the food at $1.07. Raw cost of food does not include preparation and delivery of that food. Suggested donations are asked of those who participate in the program. The sites are Harvard, McHenry, Woodstock, Hebron, Marengo, Cary and Crystal Lake. For additional information contact Nancy Moore, U. of I. Extension member; standlng.
