This week it was Jim Larkin's death that brought out a multitude of friends to pay their respects. The first person we saw was Earl Dowell, standing with Florence Larkin Cramer, towering above the crowd. He and Margaret staked out a claim down in Indiana many years ago. They are column readers and big boosters of Twice Told Tales. I wish they would write recollections of growing up in Jim Larkin was an Irish Prairie boy. My first memory of him was when he was a stalwart baseball player on the Shamrock team. He could pitch, hit hard, and play most any position. After his retirement, Jim took to gardening and grew some tomatoes the size of a small pumpkin. Hope they set aside a garden plot for him up in heaven. Met Cousin Irene Rieger (She was one of those Lake County Walsh girls). It was a surprise to her that I didn't remember Mrs. John Boyle's maiden name, Mary Walsh. Can't refnember that I didn't remember. Some of these people who correct me forget I am much younger than they are! Strolling along with Sib and Dorothy Whiting last Sunday, we met the Harvard Tazwells. He was the Supt. of McHenry County Schools for many years. "'And a good one. 'Twas a nice visit. It seemed everybody stopped to say hello to Marian Donnelly in Bimbo's meet, eat and sip emporium Sunday night. Marian has battled illness with the same gusto she used to knock over bowling pins in her younger days. What a bowler! Just thinking. Wouldn't it be great to have a magazine exchange center? Remember Way Back When men's organizations used to draw big crowds when they put on a lunch such as an oyster stew or turtle soup? The turtle soup expert I remember best was a fellow affectionately known as "Fishhook Joe" Miller. Patsy Boley was another super chef. Joe invented a weed!ess fishook, then a fly swatter that wouldn't scratch furniture. The mail arrived and the first en velop was marked "Congratulations. You are already a winner". v I read further and tossed the whole thing in the waste basket. When the baseball season opened and my White Sox lost their first three games, "friends" inquired -- "How are your White Sox doing?" Haven't heard from them lately and I could never be so unkind as to inquire about their Cubs. Or, could I? It is with a light heart I knock out this column on Tuesday afternoon. We met for lunch with Jake and Tillie Stoffel, and Bill and Dorothy Thomas. It was the first time we met Bill and Dorothy, but felt we knew them after all that fun about "Who the hell is Bill Thomas?" Jake wrote that line for me and really started the ball a-rollin'. Little did I realize there are four men in our area with the same name tag. Bill reported that Jake has a line that goes: "I start slow and taper off." As our lunch date broke up, I remembered it was time to get out another column. Except for that, I am sure the conversation would be going on and on. We look forward to a repeat per formance. ring Is.Here! 6-MONTH e Offer expires April 1100 per individual '125 per family Includes: •HOT TUB *SAUNA •WEIGHTLIFTING •LOCKER ROOM SERVICE These classes are available for an additional 55 each Women's Exercise Coed Aerobics (starts 4/25) Gymnastics (3 months-adult) Up Special ;xoires April 30 jdflk Woodstock bym & £lim \ - _rv I K £ > 7) 120 E. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Select Recipient For Mental Health Studies The Mental Health Resource League for McHenry County has announced that the $1,000 Carolyn Looze scholarship in graduate mental health studies has been awarded to Mrs. Beverly A. Yokas of Crystal Lake. The scholarship itself was established several years ago and has been given annually. This year, however, the board of directors, with the approval of Mrs. Looze's family, decided to honor the memory of Mrs. Looze, a founding member of the Mental Health Resource league (then known as the Women's auxiliary of the Family Service and Mental Health clinic). Mrs. Looze remained active and supportive of the league's goals until her death in September of 1982. She was well regarded for her vigorous support of civic and community af fairs, and the league feels privileged to remember her in this way. This year's recipient, Mrs. Yokas, a • widow with three school age children, is a graduate of George Williams college in Downers Grove and is working towards a Master's degree in Social Work at the University of Illinois (Chicago Circle) Jane Ad- dams College of Social Work. In addition to awarding scholar ships, the Mental Health Resource league funds various mental health services throughout McHenry county. In 1982 the league donated nearly $20,000 in grants to county agencies and provided funding for a variety of programs benefiting county residents.
