Status Of State Athletics Unsure A major concern of several schools in this part of the state is the status of athletics for next year. North Chicago citizens turned down a vote last week that would enable the Warhawks to continue with extra auricular activities. According to Larry Henzel, a fund drive is going to be undertaken to save athletics at the North Shore school. Larry is the long time athletic director at the school and an old coaching rival of Ken Ludwig. Hie Warhawks operated on two levels this past year, but it doesn't look promising for the future. A neighbor to the east, Wauconda, is likewise in trouble for the same reasons. And of course, Woodstock has already put a fee on those students participating. But will they be able to continue their program with students paying a fee? This is a big problem for a lot of schools. East Aurora may drop all athletics. Oswego is another school which is debating on the future of their athletic program.. At the present, McHenry and Johnsburg faces no such problem. I'm sure school officials are thinking of this problem. The solution is for the state to come to the aid of the schools. A recent survey showed Illinois ranks 49th in aid to education. To me, this is a disgrace for a state that ranks third in wealth. Where is all the money going? Surely not to the educational programs of the schools. With only six boys particiapting on varisty level (It was the day of the Scholastic aptitude Test), Dan Bolands thinclads finished fourth in the Panther-Viking Relays at Oswego last Saturday. Biran Wright won the 800 meter run in the fine time of 2:04 and Steve Carby was second in the 3200 run. The frosh-soph team finsihed second in the same meet. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors won their Fox On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt Valley opener 15-5 over Crystal Lake Central on Tuesday. For cold, chilly day, the Warriors did a fine job, and I am still trying to thaw out from the cold. In the same cold weather, Brian Wilson's Warrior baseball team dropped an 11-1 game against Jacobs at McCracken Field. The usually hard hitting Warriors had a tough time against the Jacobs hurler, gathering in two hits for the game. Mike Lamb froze at that game as we compared notes after each of the games. Dan Boland's thinclads were snowed or maybe froze out at Jacobs on Monday and made up the meet on Wednesday. Next Friday night, the Warriors will host their annual relays. It is a fine event, and brings some of the top teams in this part of the state to McCracken Field. On Wednesday, we will give you all the details, but if you like to see a well run, well organized track meet, I suggest you set aside next Friday night for a good evening of entertainment. Gary Gray's tennis team was upset by Dundee on Tuesday by the score of 3-2. According to the popular coach, "the kids didn't play well, and as a result we just got beat." Lets's hope the weather breaks for the good, so our Warrior teams can really enjoy themselves, and you golfers can do likewise. ****** Jim Wheeler returned from the Boston Marathon with a lot of happy memories. Although the popular coach didn't finish up in the standings, he enjoyed it very much. Jim remarked, "I was doing oaky for the first 18 miles, and then I began to tire." There are a lot of us who tire long before 18 miles of running. Anyway, Jim was glad for the opportunity to run in the big event, and is even looking forward maybe to trying it again next year. PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, APRIL 22.1983 Hawks Out Slug Marian Water Warriors Win Two Of Three Games The McHenry Water polo team raised its overall record to 7-2 with two wins over Highland Park and Palatine , but lost to St. Charles Tuesday. Friday the Water Warriors defeated Highland Park 17-10 and Wednesday, McHenry defeated Palatine 24-5. Bob Schaffer was the high scorer for the Warriors against Palatine with eight goals and Darren Cepulis scored seven. "They (Palatine) just didn't have the experience," said Mike Shanahan, coach of the Warriors. "We were always a step ahead of them. They have a young team." It was a different story, however, at St. Charles. St. Charles defeated them 19-13 in an all deep pool. St. Charles is the number one swimming team in the state. "They just wore us out," said Shanahan. "They are one of the top three teams in the state. We just got tired and we made some mistakes. They are just way too fast. JHS Tennis Team Wins Kevin Bonaio, a sophomore at McHenry High School, received his plaques for finishing third place in his age division in lasi October's Chicago Marathon. JOHNSBURG -- The Johnsburg tennis team past their first North Suburban Conference test Tuesday. The Skyhawks defeating Grayslake 4-1 for their first NWSC win of the season. Dan Kiernan led the Skyhawks, defeating Jim Jobes 6-0, 6-1, in number one singles. In number two singles, Paul Hendrixson stopped the Rams Roger Anderson 6-1, 6-3. Sean Clark captured number three singles for Johnsburg with a win over Quin Nguyen 6- 2, 6-3. The fourth Hawks win came from the doubles team of John Hen drixson and Scott McClory. They defeated Bob Gray and Bob Westerguard6-3,3-6 and 6-2. "I thought Sean Clark played exceptionally well at number three singles considering this is his first year playing varsity," said Denny Spraetz, coach of the Skyhawks. "I thought he played a player considerably more experienced than he is." Number two doubles was the Skyhawks only loss. Ray Tontillo and Jim Owen lost to Mike Marshall and Jeff Troemel 7-5, 6-0. Lady Hawks Lose Twice WAUCONDA -- The Johnsburg girls' track team was the victim of the short end of the stick, losing a double dual to Wauconda and Grayslake Tuesday. Wauconda defeated Johnsburg 85-45 and Grayslake won 89-39. Missy Christy led the Skyhawks with a firsts in-the shot put at 28-9, half mile at 2:29.0 and the discus 89-%. Bev Hiller grabbed firsts in the mile at 6:04 and the long jump 14-8. Vickie DeBau was first in the high jump at 4-8. P i t c h e r S t e v e Banaszynski pitched a no-hitter for five innings and Johnsburg batters banged out eight hits, as the Skyhawks defeated Marian Central 11-2 in six innings. Johnsburg is now 2-2 overall. "He (Banaszynski gave up no earned runs," said Jim Meyers, skipper of the Skyhawks. "I was pleased with his pit ching performance. Last two innings he lost his control and walked four batters. He was getting tired.", scored three runs in the fourth. Rob Worzala led Johnsburg hitters with two hits and Joe Mer- jercik had one and three runs batted in. "I was pleased with the intensity at the plate," Meyers said. "We caused a lot of Marian mistakes." SPORTS FANS... I BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought to you bv Phil Oeffllng Ever wonder why golf courses have 18 holes instead of some other number?...Ac tually, in the early days of golf's development in England, different courses did have dif ferent numbers of holes...For example, when the first British Open was played, at the Prestwick Club in 1860, that course had only 12 holes...Some other courses then had 7 holes, some had 8, some had 14...But the most famous course, the St. Andrews Clubpf Scotland, just hap pened to have T8 holes- -and in the years following 1860, other courses increased to 18 holes merely to follow the pattern set by St. Andrews...And, thus 18 holes became the stan dard for golf courses everywhere. * * * One of the strangest teams in baseball history was the 1930 Philadelphia Phils...All 8 regular players on that team batted over .300 that year-yet the team finished in LAST place I * * . * How fast could you drive a car in the old days?...Well, the first auto race in the United States was held in Chicago on Thanksgiving Day, 1895...It was a 50-mile race, and the winning car, driven by famous inventor Frank Duryeo traveled at the average speed of---believe it or not--7% miles per hour! * * * I bet you didn't know...McHenry State Bank is your boat and recreational vehicle loan headquarters.
