MAY 4,1983 The McHenry Plalndealer Hoffmann Estates Grab Relays Title, McHenry Eighth Even though scoring four more points than last year, the Warriors - finished four notches below their 1962 1 McHenry Relay placing. The Warriors placed eighth in the 12-team classic last Friday. Breaking one meet record on the way, Hoffman Estates out distanced Belvidere to take the McHenry Relays crown. Hoffman Estates scored 89 points and Belvidere was second with 74. Lake Forest was third with 70, Kaneland 56, Schaumburg 55, Lake Park 50 Buffalo Grove 40, McHenry 34, Elk Grove 22, Crown 13, Woodstock 9 and Dundee 8. Hoffman Estates broke the varsity relay record with a time 1:32.7. The old record was estab" " by St. Charles in 1980 at 1:33.0. The McHenry 880 relay t( finished third behind Scha with a time of 1:35.7. SchaumSurg' team was timed at 1:34.5. Trie Warriors were last in their heat before the last leg! Mladen Rudman ran the last leg and he was just edged by the Schaumburg runner at the finish line. Denny Shaver, Matt Adams and Mike Milinac were the other 880 relay members. , % On their way to winning the 18th annual event, Estates claimed firsts in the 440 relay and low hurdle shuttle. McHenry's only first came from the four mile relay team. That relay was to be one of the more exciting events of the evening. Brian Wright was able to give the Warriors the first place position after the second handoff. The Warriors held on to it and Chris Creutz battled the Hoffman Estates runner on the last mile leg and just nipped him at the finish line. The Warrior team of Wright, Carby, Koleno and Creutz finished in a time of 18:33.4. Estates was credited with the same time. Dan Boland, coach of the Warriors, was just amazed how a four mile race could finish so close. "The four mile relay was just great," added Boland. "Their were some real good track schools and individuals. Some of the fifties were 6atstdbfiftf£)'\5fci&Bt)GI1dV^ and he added he. .figured Hoffjnan Instates would win it. Boland said he and many other . coaches like the relays because of the participation that is possible. "It's a Dundee's All FVC Pitching Fatal To McHenry The McHenry Warrior baseball team found out why two Dundee pitchers were all-Fox Valley per formers last yeart The two pitchers combined tydefeat the Warriors in both games of a double header on Saturday. Greg Russell defeated the Warriors 12-2, and Todd Minter stoped the Warriors 3-1. V But, one pitcher that impressed Warrior skipper, Brian Wilson the most, was his own. Mike Bauml, who normally doesn't pitch for the Warriors, pitched the second game. Both of the Dundee runs were unearned. Bauml was pressed into pitching duties when Pat Dunn was injured in the shoulder. Wilson said he originally wanted to keep Bauml out of the pitching rotation so he could con centrate on his hitting. Bauml is * currently hitting .500 in the FVC. Steve Aim pitched for the Warriors chance to let some of the better sophomore and freshmen to get some varsity points. It gives you the chance to have three or four runners to place on a winning relay. It's a real good ipeet for that." McHenry received another third in the sophomore sprint medley. The team of Craig Hill, Mike Lobinsky, Jim Shaver and Chris Creutz finished with a time of 3:53.2. Elk Grove had the top time at 3:51.1. A fourth place was turned in by the ' 880 frosh-soph relay team which had a little help. The Warriors placed first |n their heat. The Hoffman Estates team was winning, but a bad handoff resulted in both Estates runners wiping out on the last exchange. The Warriors finished at 1:41.7. Buffalo Grove was first with a time of 1:40.2. A fifth place was turned in by the Warrior varsity sprint medley. Mike Milinac, Rudman and Wright finished in a time of3:49,6. Lake Park was the winner at 3:44.7. The only other placing was done by the McHenry triple jump team. Cliff Morris and Todd Hudson combined for a 103-7V2 score for sixth place. Belvidere took that event with a 113- 6% total. McHenry was scheduled to have a dual at Woodstock High School Monday, but rained forced that one to be cancelled. It was not determine if that one would be made up McHenry's Dave Beste seems to have cleared the pole this time. He cleared 5-6 for the meet, but it wasn't enough for the the Warriors to place in the high jump. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD Mike Milinac is all s)et to go, as he gets the baton from Matt Adams during the 880 mile realy. Milinac and Admas teamed up with Denny Shaver and Mladen Rudman to finish third with a time of 1:35.7. STAFF PHOTO -- WAYNE GAYLORD in the first game. That game was marred by five errors by the Warrior defense and only three of the 12 runs were earned. "Give Dundee an inch and th^y will take a mile," said Wilson on the defending FVC champions." Bauml continued his hot hitting. He safely hit in three of four chances and tripled twice in the first game. He also knocked in a run. Kevin Moore was also three of four. The second game was also marred by costly mistakes, according to Wilson. His outfield misjudged two fly balls which resulted in the three runs. Wilson added, if it weren't for the droppe&fly balls, Bauml wouldn't have given up the runs.- ^ Kris Teuber, Mike Podpora, Tim Pankiewicz all had one hit to pace the Warrior hitting attack in the second game. Pankiewcz's hit scored the only Warrior run. NOW YOU KNOW YOU LIKE IT TRYOW ™ FAMILY STYLE SPECIAL'̂ 16 PIECE BUCKET OF BROASTED $£95 !
