PAGE 7 - PLAIN DEALER - FRIDAY, MAY 13,1983 12-Inch Softball Destined Reversal Happens PATWIRTZ Sooner or later it was destined to happened. For two seasons the Fox Hole Tap has dominated the Eastern Division while at the other end Little John's struggled at the bottom of the heap. * • After the dust had settled from four opening day softball games at Knox Park, the situation was clearly reversed. Little John's had swept both King's Row and Jack's Snack Shop- McHenry Oil, while the West End Pub had stunned the Fox Hole. The result--Little John's was all by themselves in first place, while the Fox Hole Tap was in the celler after one day in McHenry 12-inch play. In the evening's best game, the weather was so cold that Manager Ken Prazak was thinking of breairing out the "furlined" cigars. His West End Pub needed no fires as they scored in every inning but the fifth and had the big plays when needed. They took an exciting 12-11 victory over the Fox Hole in their first of two encounters. The big plays for the Pub included Tom Prudden's cannon throw from left center to the plate nailing Ron Miller to take the Tap out a potential big inning in the sixth. Third baseman Tom Burke had earlier put West End Pub on the right track when he leaped and snared Jeff Meyers line shot at third to begin the contest. Meyers would be robbed again when Pub pitcher John Michels stopped his hard shot up the middle to throw him out at first. In the bottom of the sixth, Pub slugger Don Prazak hit a deep fly to left which Rich Meyers backed up for, caught, but fell allowing all three West End players to clear the bases. This gave them a four run lead going into the final inning. After Fox Hole tied the score in the top of the seventh, Doc Wallen led off the West End half with a single to right. A two base error put Wallen on third. After two intentional passes filled the bases, Rich Lindquist came up with the game winning hit. A shot tfnto left, and West End Pub won a big one. Michels and Wallen each had three hits for the winners. Joe Dehn, Gary Gilpin, Mike Peters©*^ and Ron Miller all had three hits for the Fox Hole Tap. FoxHoleTap 0033014 -- 11 West End Pub 2411031 -- 12 Little John's had won only two games during the entire 1982 season. In fact, their only 1981 victory was a forfeit win. So when Little John's swept their • opening day doubleheader, they equaled in .one evening what took them two seasons to accomplish. The winners pounded (Hit 16 hits, ran the bases well and played elert defense as they swept past King's Row in five innings 14-2. The second contest was closer, but pitcher Gary Rosing knew his ex-teammates well as he pitched Little John's to a 9-7 victory, over Jack's Snack Shop- McHenry Oil. John Griffith paced the winners in game one going four for four with four RBI's. Steve Lane slammed a pair of triples, a single and drove in three runs. Kip Novotny drove in three more runs with a pair of base hits. King's Row scored both runs on a two run single by Jamie Fung. King's Row 02000 -- 2 Little John's 025 34 -- 14 Jim Pinkstaff had two hits and two RBI's to lead Little John's in game two. Steve Lane smacked his third triple of the season off the fence and added a pair of sacrifice flies good for two RBI's. Jim Quinn was good for three runs scored on two hits. Dan McAuliffe had a single, double and two RBI's for Jack's Snack Shop- McHenry Oil. Bob Michels added two hits and would have had a third except for the made by Little John's Steve Cable in left center. Little John's 3220101--9 Jack's Snack Shop-McHenry Oil 10410 1 0 -- 7 Jack's Snack Shop-McHenry Oil defeated Taylor Made Golf 6-2. The winners were led by Pete Blackburn's two hits and three RBI's including the league's first 1983 homerun. Bob Michels, John Oeffling and Rich Jablonski all had two hits for the winners. Fred Stocker had two of Taylor Made's six hits. Both teams have to play Jacobs, the third place team. While the Warriors play Woodstock, the Gators have Cary-Grove left on the schedule. In looking over the rest of the schedule, the Warriors do have the advantage. On paper Cary seems to be tougher than Woodstock. However, both teams have to play them one ata time and try to avoid an upset along the way. Enjoyed the Warrior 3-0 win over South last reek. It' oucai you re Karpavicius two home runs didn't hurt, and Cissy Pinkstaff's two-hit pitching was a big factor in the victory. On the baseball scene, the South Gators hold a one game edge over defending champ Dundee. From here it looks as if Jim Beck's Gators are in the drivers seat Dundee has to play district rivals Jacobs and Crown. There is no love lost between the coaches of these teams, with the split of the district. So one can imagine both Jacobs and and Crown will go all out to defeat their rival, the Dundee Card's. The Warrior thinclads of Dan Boland will be at the Fox Valley Conference meet this afternoon at Crown. The Tigers of Crystal Lake Central are the heavy favorite, having gone undefeated so far this season. The Warriors are lacking individuals in some events, but we hope they can pick up a few championships from a relay team or two and a few individuals. To beat Woodstock 5-0 and hope to make some waves this weekend in the FVC meet at Crystal Lake. Crystal Lake South is the heavy favorite to win it all again, but Cary-Grove and the Warriors could add some anxious moments for the Gators. week. It was really a good game, and any time you can shut out a first place team, you know really did the job. Of course, Karen On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt pick up the team title is asking a little too much for the local sauad. The girls team will be at the Crown District tomorrow. Delia Saunders, the distance runner for the Warriors, is probably the only hope for a state qualifier. Let's hope a few more Warrior's can do the trick and go to state next weekend. Gary Gray's tennis team is improving. They Donna Hoch, member of the Warrior badminton team under Coach Jim Popovich, qualified for the state finals this weekend. All Warrior fans are wishing her the best of luck in the state tourney. Congratulations are in order to an old friend George Haley, coach at Wauconda. He was honored by the Northern Illinois Officials Association last week for his contribution, to high school athletics. George, who has retired, has also contributed to Warrior athletics, having several of his sons participate for the Warriors. My only regret is I was in Pittsburg and missed the great event. Anyway, a tip of the "Irish" fedora to a fellow "Irishman" for a job well done over the many years of teaching and coaching the youth of Wauconda. May his days of retirement be happy. In remember for lastoi you weekend golfers, »t warmer. Nothing can be closing itnas toagt like last Sunday. Tnere is going to be better days ahead for we golfers.
