LAKEMOOR-LILYMOOR AREA Margaret Karas 385-4934 Pizza And Pop Night, May 26 With most of our first through fifth graders attending Hilltop ,school, the Hilltop Parents and Teachers Association is hoping for a large at- (tendance at the "Pizza and Pop" night Thursday, May 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Refreshments will be sold to add to the HPTO'S funds for sponsoring activities for the school children. The pizza can be enjoyed while viewing artistic abilities of the youngsters in the "Art Awareness Show", or taken home frozen for enjoyment at another time. This is a HPTO's last program of the year, and deserves the support of all parents. ji* • MISSING CHILD The movement of emergency vehicles on Lily Lake road Friday, May 13, added to the gamut of rumors that permeated the Lily Lake area, of possible danger to a young child reported missing. Concern for the childs' safety was everywhere, even though no one seemed to know the child's name, location or where she was last seen. Had she been kid napped by some driver on Route 120? Had she fallen into Lily Lake and drowned? Was she lost in Moraine Hills Park area? The terrors adults feel when a child is missing were all evident. When news was released that the child had been found unharmed, a wave of relief passed through the community. It wasn't until the article in last Wednesday's Plaindealer, that residents learned the child had been at pre-school class. As Peter Marshall said, "Sic a fuss o'er twa prunes". PERMITS IN LAKEMOOR Mark Zeffery, Director of Public Works in Lakemoor, reminds residents of thVhecessity of having a permit for remodeling or repair of buildings, 6y fqfr new construction, Advance oetice of the planned hew or renewal work must be given to the > village in order to determine if the plans adhere to the village building and zoning codes. Failure to make advance application dfhld result in the halting of construction. The village is bound by the laws which are made to protect everyone's interests. | " * FIRE IN LILYMOOR Residents in Lilymoor had been watching with interest the remodeling being done on a home on Friendly avenue. Neighbor Doug Alheit had given a helping hand ^to Burt Hillebrand, who was readying the home for his family's occupancy. The installation of new kitchen cabinets costing several thousand dollars was just a part of the remodeling that had. been done. When Burt came to his soon-to-be-residence Sunday morning, May 1$, he was horror stricken to find firemen putting out a fire that had destroyed all his labor and dreams of a lovely home. Dougie had been across the lake with members of the horseshoe team when the fire whistle blew, and seeing smoke arising, thought it was his house that was burning. He raced home to find his place safe and the house next to his on fire. 1 The community extends sympathy ' to the Hillebrand family, and hopes this loss will not prevent them from becoming our neighbors. tTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION long the many volunteers who were recognized May 19 by the McHenry County Senior Citizen Council, was Julia Kraus from Lakemoor,. volunteer receptionist at the Meet and Eat Center at the Moose lodge. BROWNIE AWARD NIGHT Dottle Mentzer reporting on the activities of Hilltop Brownie Troop No. 413, notes the following: On Monday night, May 16, The "Fly-up Ceremony" was held and 19 girls received awards for which they had worked very hard. The four girls "flying-up" to become Junior Girl Scouts this fall (the next branch of scouting for them.) were Michelle Cook, Tracy Reams, Leslie Miles and Tracy Thompson. An award was given to John Nilles, principal of Hilltop school, for the use of the school for weekly meetings. Mrs. Lily Ann Baker, representing the Women of the Moose Chapter 1248, was also given an award for the purchase of the troops' Brownie flag. Jim Mentzer representing the "Woodmen of the World Life In surance Society", donated the American flag to the troop, which will be carried by the Brownies as they march in the Fiesta Day parade. Closing Ceremony was followed by refreshments and appreciation was extended to the co-leaders and parents who were helpful in making this a very adventurous year. WELCOME BACK, BAKER! "DOWN UNDER" VISITOR "How to fly a boomerang" was one of the joys learned from the visit of Jennifer LaCroix, sister of Susan LaCroix Brindise of Lakemodr. Jennifer arrived from her home near Melbourne, Australia, June 6L loaded with presents made of wool for 'Susan, husband Ralph, and children Vickie and Christie; phis two boomerangs, Australians' favorite toy. It too? a bit of practice, but we now have people who can throw that piece of wedge shaped wood and have it return. Jennifer emigrated to Australia aboard the second to last ship with people who had signed up to settle in Australia, some six years ago. She is a physical education teacher, and now owns her own home and is truly an Aussie-even to accent. Time has been spent in Florida with her parents, with a side trip to Detroit, and then a return to Lakemoor. After a day and night with sister Susan and her family, Jennifer will br :<r her way back to her new homeland "down under". ° SESAME STREET PARTY Amy Hensley will always remember her fourth birthday. Evaluation Of Beaches Starts Beginning this week, the McHenry County Department of Health starts its swimming beach evaluation program for this year by collecting samples from naturally occurring swimming beaches. Throughout the swimming season, samples will be collected Monday and Tuesday of each week so analyses can be com pleted by Wednesday afternoons and citizens made aware of the conditions in the waters and beaches prior to the weekend. Criteria used by the Department to determine if the waters at a beach are satisfactory or unsatisfactory for swimming are those specified by the Illinois Department of Public Health in their rules and regulations con cerning recreational areas and recreational waters. , Those standards are: 1,000 total Coliform organisms per 100 milliliters of water and-or 100 fecal Coliform organisms in 100 milliliters of water. If a sample of water from a beach has more of either total Coliform or fecal Coliform organisms than those standards, that swimming area is considered unsatisfactory. However, the standards recognize . the variability present in natural swimming areas and specify that before a beach is posted, these standards must be exceeded by two consecutive samples. Also, the standards specify that any time two consecutive samples exceed 5,000 total coliform per 100 milliliters of water and-or 500 fecal coliform per 100 milliliters of water, the beach shall be physically closed to restrict persons from having access to those waters. Each week the department will be issuing information concerning the results of the sampling during that week, specifying those beaches which were found to be unsatisfactory and also specifying those beaches which have had two consecutive un satisfactory samples collected from them which we will be posting as unsafe for swimming.
