Crystal Lake South won the meet as expected. But they did receive a lot of heat. McHenry was right behind them with 16 points and Johnsuburg scored 14. Cary-Grove was fourth with 13, Wqodstock 8, Marian Central 4, Mafengo 2 and Crystal Lake Central 0. : The McHenry Warriors will be sending the doubles team of Scott Rhode and Kevin Burgess to the state meet at Arlington . this weekend. Johnsburg will be sending number one singles player Dan Kiernan. "We won a battle, but lost the war," said Gary Gray, coach of the Warriors. "We decided our best bet to win the district was to split Salman and Burgess and put a left hander in each of the doubles." Rhode and Burgess qualified for the McHenry Nine End FVC Play With Shutout CRYSTAL LAKE - The McHenry Warrior baseball team ended Fox Valley play with a 4-0 win over Crystal Lake Central. The Warriors ended the season with a 6-8 FVC mark and in fifth place. They are 8-10 overall. -Mike Bauml pitched the shutout for the Warriors. He only allowed five hits, three walks and he struckout three. Steve Markinson was the losing pitcher for Central. Bauml lowered his ERA to 1.28. IKris Teuber and Steve Aim each hail two hits for the Warriors. Teuber knocked in one RBI and Aim scored twice. ^Warrior coach Brian Wilson was satisfied with the season. "Only the top teams were we unable to beat. We split with everyone else. With another ye£r of experience, we might win the o<her half." m Win First Baseball state meet with a battle with two brothers from Johnsburg. They defeated Paul and John Hendrixson 7- 5, 6-3. The Warrior team lost the district doubles championship to\South's Paul LeCoQue and Jed Aberna^hy 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. ^ "It was just a classuf high school tennis match," said Gray. The Johnsburg ^doubles team finished in fourth place. Rhode and Burgess defeated Greg Wallwerts and Jim Enright of Crystal Lake South 7-6, 6-4 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Joe Lillie and John Huh of Woodstock 6-0, Kiernan qualified for the state meet by eliminating Tim Foley of Crystal Lake South 6-3, 6-3. Earlier, Kiernan defeated Rick Tilltson of Cary-Grove 6-2,6-0; Chris Stumbris of McHenry 6- 0, 6-0 and Gene Williams of Crystal Lake South 6-1, 6-1. "It was expected. He was seeded number one," said Hawk Coach Denny Spraetz on Kiernan's district championship. "He played very well. He was healthy this time. He had a lot nore energy this time. "He was sick at the conference leet. He had control over his op ponents. He ran* the show." Both Gray and Spraetz came into the meet with their minds set on winning. Gray felt his strategy for the meet was the right one. As it turned out, it ended up to be very close finish. "We we're hoping for second or first. The teams we played were very good," sdded Spraetz. Besides losing the district title to South, Gray's only regret was not getting Salman to qualify. Salman was teamed up with Todd Rhode. They opened up with a win over Jerry Jarosz and Mike Lahti of Crystal Lake Central to advance into the quar terfinals. There, they lost to Crystal Lake South's number one doubles team of 7-6, 6-3. Chris Stumbris and Steve Fallon played the singles spots for McHenry. Stumbris defeated Bruce Franklin of Marian 6-0, 6-2, but lost to Kiernan. Fallon defeated Rick Anderson of Marengo 6-2, 6-2, before losing to Crystal Lake South's Ed Foley, the number one seed. Jacobs defeated Woodstock 16-3 in the first round. It was a combination of Warrior hitting, and a Friday night prom at Johnsburg that led to the lopsided win. The Warriors pounded out 17 hits with Renee Mezzano collecting four, Karen Karpavicius and Kris Keevil three and pitcher Cissy Pinkstaff two. Pinkstaff hurled a five hitter. In fairness to Coach Bob Schmitt of the Skyhawks, his girls were not alert Saturday morning, having their an nual Prom night the night before. The word was that several of his girls were missing from the lineup. Pat Wirtz, coach of the Warriors, was well pleased with his slugging Warriors. "It is a lot easier playing a team that has a prom the night before. We hit the ball pretty good today, and when you do that you can score a lot of runs." The Warriors wasted no time in the opening inning when the first four batters hit safely, including a two run homer by Karpavicius. Patty John son, Mezzano and Pinkstaff had the other hits in the inning. In the second, the Warriors again scored four runs. Keevil had the first of her three doubles, followed by hits from Johnson, Mezzano and Pinkstaff. Jackson Gains State Track Berth T.TST.F. -- Jay Jackson became only the second track athlete in John- sburg's short history to gain a berth in the state track meet which will be held at Eastern Illinois University next Saturday. The Skyhawk senior took a second in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:46.00. John King of Immaculate Conception just edged Jackson at the finish line for first place. ^ Jackson's time was a new John sburg school record. The Hawks as a team scored 10 points for 11th place at the Lisle Sectional. Luther South was the sectional champion with 42 points. "We're real happy to send Jay down to represent our school," said Ben Beck, coach of the Hawk track team. "I think he ran a pretty good race. The pace started out slow and King and him ran together the whole way. They broke away from everybody else at the mile mark. King just broke away at the end. "I. think Jay ran a real smart race. King just had a little bit more on this ft 14.! :> John Payne and Brian Siudak were the only other Skyhawks to place in the 25-team sectional. Payne took a third in the pole vault at 12-0. Siudak was fourth in the shot put with a heave of 47-8. It was a new Johnsburg school record. "Jay will be one of the top seeded in class A at the state meet," said Beck. "I'm real excited about his chances this weekend. A large amount of people were sent from our sectional and I'm real happy about sending Jay. I hope it (sending people to state) becomes a habit. Season Ends For Warrior Track Team ROCKFORD -- The season for the McHenry boys' track team all but ended at the Rockford sectional Friday. The Warriors failed to qualify anybody for state and placed 11th. Fox Valley Conference opponent, Crystal Lake Central, won the meet with 55 points.
