12-Inch Softball PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNRSDAY. MAY 25,1983 McHenry s Kively Sinks 297 Yard Ace y0gfs Triple Lifts Huemann's Past Doherty's Hole-in-one's are starting to come second nature to 47-year- old Harold Kively of McHenry. Kively sank his second hole-in- one in less than a year last week Wednesday. The snot was made on the 14th hole at Pinecrest Country Club. What makes this ace so amazing, the 14th is a 297- yard dog-leg left par four hole. Playing in his evening league, Kivley said he thought he over shot the green. "WhenYhit the ball, I made the comment I thought the ball went beyond the green," said Kively. "I looked to see where the flag- pin placement was. The flag-pm is usually on the backside or front side of the green. You usually play that hole to the left side or straight down the fairway. "I nit the ball straight down the middle and let the wind float the ball back to the green. With a strong wind, you should let the wind do the work for you." When Kivley and nis group walked up to the green, they found everybody's ball except Kively's. "I told them I must be over the green," said Kivley. "I walked clear past the back-side of the green "just looking for the ball. One of the guys then said it is probably in the cup and you made an hole in one. - "Not finding the ball, I dropped my bag next to the green and walked towards the flag stick. I could see the reflection of the orange ball off the yellow flag stick. "I told them I wasn't going to take it out. One of the guys took it out of the cup and gave it to me." ' Kivley said the professional at the Pinecrest Country Club told him it was only the second hole- in-one made on the 14th hole. Another golfer in the party hit his second shot towards the cup and rimmed it, according to Kivley. "He told me it was just as well, because he didn't want to get an eagle and still get beat." Kively's first hole-in-one occured last August at Hunter Country Club in Richmond. He sewed it on the second hole, a par three and 225 yards. After the first one, Kively says hole-in-one's come a lot easier. "After the first one, you break the ice. AH Sam Sneed said after PATWIRTZ Mark Vogt's.one out triple in the bottom of the third, plus an RBI groundout by John Pitzen was the first Huemann's run lir a low scoring 3-1 affair with Doherty's. An inning later, Frank Cuda and Tom Blenner led off with back to back singles and then scored as Pete Merkel and Mark Vogt picked up RBI's Those three runs turned out to be all the runs Huemann's needed as Doherty's managed but one unearned run in the fifth. ^ e v . Steve Mai scored the lone run after Jeff Medding's third hit of the game put him in scoring position for Mike Rogers' RBI single. Mark Vogt and Scott Ledzter had two hits each for Huemann's Water Conditioning. Jewel Park 10 Johnsburg Businessmen 8 Jewel Park played perhaps their best game ever as they socked out 19 hits in a 10-8 victory over Johnsburg. A big six run fourth inning erased a -4-2 Businessmen lead which included Jerry Brodin's solo homerun in the bottom of the Johnsburg first. Four batters in the Jewel Park lineup collected three hits each. Jim Cook had a big night with a triple, single and two run double. Leon Palatas added three hits and two RBI's. Jim Leshuck and Gary Schnulle both had three hits. Dan Mancuso and Bob Hawkinson were good for two hits each for the winners. Jen*y Brodin added two singles to his homerun to pace Johnsburg. John DiCiccio added two hits. During the fifth inning, a rarity occurred. Jewel Park"1, was threatening, bases loaded and no outs. Ray Layne flew out and on the play Jim Leschuck scored from third. On the same play, Gary Schnulle rounded third from second base and was tagged out in a rundown. Bob Hawkinson broke for second and was also thrown out to complete a triple play. It was only the second triple play recorded in Men's 12-inch history. Rusty Nail Inn 11 Lakeside Inn 5 The Rusty Nail Inn kept pace with their undefeated rivals in the Eastern Division with an 11-5 victory over Lakeside inn. The victory gives them an unblemished 3-0 mark. The contest was nowhere near last year's 45-2 wipeout. In fact, Lakeside Inn was in the game all the way. Lakeside held the Nail to a solo run in the first and in their half of the inning scored five runs. Dave Sch midt's two run bases loaded single, plus a wind blown three-run inside the park homer by Ray Bielski over the Nail left fielder's head were the big blows. The Nail countered with a six run second which turned out to be the winning margin. But Rusty Nail pith- cer John Connell, plus the Nail defense were tough as Lakeside garnered only one more hit -- a lead off single in the sixth. Rick Wakitsch, Don Bentz and Ray Thelen all went three for four to lead the Rusty Nail. Doug Freund, Jim Zasada, Chuck Marke and John Meyers added two hits each for the winners. Don Bentz set a modern day 12-inch record when he was thrown out twice trying to steal second. Actually, hef was caught too far off the base after singles. Johnsburg Businessmen 14 Huemann's 2 The Johnsburg Businessmen made short work of Huemann's Water- Conditioning ir. a slaughter shortened 14-2 contest. Jerry Brodin picked up where he left off in game one with a pair of doubles, pair of sacrifice flies, and'/ five RBI's to lead Johnsubrg. Phil Oeffling had three hits and three runs scored. Wayne Hiller drove in three runs with a pair of hits. Matt Oik, Harry May and Wayne Frantz had two hits each for the winners. Frantz included two RBI's.
