One container holds a full year of magazines upright! This next little trick is guaranteed to impress the neighborhood also. It's never easy to,set up a long ladder by yourself but Ben Hill, who works for the Extension Service, seems to have found a solution. He ties a rope to the bottom rung of the ladder and stretches the rope under the ladder on the ground. He then just steps on the rope as he pushes the ladder upright and it doesn't slip along the ground. Finally, here's an age- old idea that's coming back in style. ̂ Many people sprout seeds to save on food costs. You can use beans, wheat, alfalfa and many other types of seeds for sprouting. Rinse off a large spoonful of seeds in a quart jar and strain the water out through a cheese cloth. Store the seeds someplace where it's warm and dark. You can virtually forget about them except for rinsing the seeds every morning and evening. In four of five days you'll have sprouts that are ready to go directly on your salads. * You may have seen an article t wrote recently about my Uncle Art and his \ "inventions.,v Rather than throw anything away, he would find a second use for just about every item. Uncle Art was sort of "off the wall" so to speak. Since that column appeared, other people with other "inventions" have surfaced. As you'll soon discover, some are unique. So in the in terest df, saving you time, money, and giving these fertile minds 'the. notoriety they deserve, let's proceed. The following method of mowing the lawn may Ssaye you some time but lit "will definitely have the neighbors talking. If you have a self- propelled mower and a large yard, you're in business. I know a man who drove a wooden post in the middle of his lawn and tied a rope to it. The other end of the rope was fastened to the mower. When the mower was started and put in gear it would circle the post. With each pass Of the mower, the circle would become smaller and smaller as . the rope wound around the post. I saw the mower in action and it worked reasonably well, missing just a few patches of grass. Later I i; heard the rope had broken once that summer and the mower had made a wide path %thropgh the asparagus \ bed before it came to ' rest. If you're bothered ; wi th cockroaches ground the house, see if < this helps. Fill a quart jar half-full of beer and build a ramp leading to the rim- The sweet smell of the brew at tracts the roaches so that they will walk up | the ramp and dive in for i a drink. Once in, they're unable to get out. Last July I talked to a woman in Pittsfield who had a handy way to store old magazines. She saves the giant size laundry soap boxes and cuts off the tops at about a 25 degree angle and then pastes some bits of The Evangelical Lutheran Church of All Saints 312 587 7727 (Office) 312 497 4527 (Postor's Office) Rev.
