An ugly purple bruise closed one eye, and her nose was broken. Emergency room personnel hovered over her, and a police officer filled out a report. The damage wasn't the result of a traffic accident or of a Sagging. The woman had been saten by her husband. a She's just one of the two million Women nationally and the estimated 4,500 women in McHenry county who kre victims of domestic violence each ?ear-Battering occurs in all age groups and at all socioeconomic and 'educational levels, and left unchecked jn a household, it usually increases. Death is often the final outcome. ..<0-S According to Mary Rockers of Turning Point, battering has been defined as an assault on an adult in- » timate which takes the form of 1 physical or sexual abuse or destruction of property. Battering is usually the result of the batterer's loss of control in a highly-charged emotional atmosphere and is his attempt to gain control of his feelings through the domination of another person," Ms. Rockers ex plains. In a sense, both parties in domestic violence are victims. In many cases the batterer himself was the victim of abuse as a child or he came, from a household where domestic violence took place. He generally feels angry, confused, ashamed, and helpless. But now there is help for him in McHenry county. Turning Point, Inc., is a non-profit group organized in 1980 to eliminate domestic violence. Its Stress Telephone line and Men's Support group are attempts to break the cycle of violence by providing men who batter with alternate ways to express their anger. Co facilitator Rockers describes the support session as a time when small groups of six to McHENRY OPTICIANS 1301 Riverside Drive McHenry, Illinois A c r o s s From The Fox Hole) 385-9240 "'-sses made while you wait! We also help them to e«ne to an understanding of their Own feelings and acceptable forms of expressing them. It's important that they know that battering is a learned response to stress and that it can be unlearned," Ms. Rockers maintains. The men in the group sessions are encouraged to recognize when they are in an "out-of control" situation and to avoid violence by Using techniques such as the "time-out" procedure. "The men are ar'vistjd to leave the situation, to go for a walk or -better yet- go for a run," Rockers adds. "We also suggest that they call a friend when they're really uptight, or call the Stress, line to vent their anger or to settle themselves down." The Men's Support group helps members become aware of, un derstand, and control their violent behavior. <• >?- Working with Ron Baer, director of the Counseling center in Crystal Lake, this program has been developed over the past three months and is modeled after highly successful programs currently at work in Massachusetts and' Minnesota. "Men who batter women need to know that they aren't 'crazy* or 'sick', and that there is help for them. Through our support sessions we encourage them to help each other," Rockers continued. Who are candidates for Turning Point's support group? In many cases, they are men who have recognized their need for help and who call the Stress line. It is hoped that others will be referred by private counselors. Currently Ms.- Rockers and Baer are working on a proposal to the State's Attorney'? office that would request the cotirt system to specify participation in the Support group as an alternative to jail sen tences in some cases of domestic violence. Support group sessions are free and meet for an hour-and-a-half weekly for a six-month period. Persons who are interested in more information should call Trailing Point's Stress line at 338-8060. And because domestic violence can be found in any neigh borhood, chances are there may be a need for information on Turning Point's programs. ILL. 60050 » 815-385-3500 County Meals On Wheels Serve Invalids, Elderly Five days a week, rain or shine, volunteers in McHenry, Crystal Lake, and Woodstock deliver meals to the homes of those who need help in ob taining a nutritious noon meal. "Meals on Wheels" is a program under auspices of Church Women United that began a dozen years ago. Cooperating with the McHenry hospital and Memorial hospital, volunteers were formed with the participating churches assuming responsibility for delivery during designated weeks. The communities each have local chairmen who must coordinate the food preparation, be sure volunteers to deliver are available and locate substitutes when necessary. The local chairman is Lillian Bolger. Crystal Lake and McHenry "Meals on Wheels" obtain their meals ^rom McHenry hospital. Woodstock's program is served through Memorial hospital participation. Facilities and equipment to assure hot food delivery is an integral part of the planning. In addition, evening meals in the form of a sold supper are available through special arrangement. The cost of this home delivery service is about $3 a, meal. Mrs. Smith said it is intended primarily for the invalid and convalescing but agrees many elderly citizens take part because otherwise it would be difficult (if not impossible) for them to have a nutritious meal available. A look at the number served shows the importance, of the service. The total is limited by respective hospital's capacity to provide the food while at the same time handling feeding patients and employees at the busiest time of the day-around the noon hour. 5 All funds collected pay for the food, the Church Women United wanting nothing for their other programs or to pay for this particular service. "This is Christianity m action," explained Mrs. Smith. "We want it that way." ? ADVERSE AFFECT Governor Thompson has warned that without the funds that would be generated by his four-year financial plan for Illinois, several programs would be adversely affected. Among those programs are the Illinois Arts Council, income support under the general assistance program, help for the developmental^ disabled, funding for day care centers, employment of child abuse workers, funding for the Guardianship and Advocacy com mission and the existence of local revenue sharing. Additionally, the governor said, the bills introduced in the legislature this session contain nearly $633 million in new ap propriations the state cannot afford and another $540 million in overap- propriations for new or continued programs that cannot be supported without new revenues. hair removal CALL FOR FREE MINI-TREATMENT t CONSULT 615-344-3640 4302 W.
