May 25, June 1 & June 8,1983) No. 830225 Saving Money This article is for persons who ^wrestle with minor household repairs. It's not for that select group that always has the right size screwdriver for the job or the natural ability to fix a leaky faucet. Actually these few lines are for myself and the majority of Americans that are all thumbs. Major catastrophies and repairs usually call for an experienced repairman and that will (in most cases) prove expensive. What I am talking about now are the small repairs that a person should easily be able to do without any outside help. Since my landlord lives out of state it is impossible for him to come over and fix a clogged drain or the outside yard light. Even though being a renter usually means someone else should do the work, the fact remains that the only way some things get done is to do them yourself. In return, it will mean that less of your money will be spent paying someone else to do the job. A few days of living in an older house brought to my attention little noticed before we rented: cracked plaster under the kitchen sink; a window hinge that had pulled out from the wood; loose bathroom tiles. (All ofthesethings seem to have waited until after we rented before going wrong.) After I had totally botched one job and had to call in someone to cover up my mistakes, a simple fact struck me; before trying other repairs perhaps I should gt* some training. One avenue that's open to most everyone is the public library. Most libraries have volumes of "HOW TO" books ranging from plumbing repairs to cutting masonry blocks and patching concrete. Knowing how landlords are unavailable much of the time, you may just want to learn some of these skills. j Perhaps the next step would be to talk to someone at the local hardware store where "FIX-IT" books are a l s o a v a i l a b l e . Recommendations about the best item of hardware or tool to use for any given problem can also be found there. If you're interested in taking instructions on home repairs you may want to contact a local high school to see if any night classes or adult education classes are offered. The money spent on these classes could save you money in the long run. "A moment's insight is sometimes worth a life's experience." THIS FRIDAY, JUNE 3 FROM 9 A.M.
