Hay ward , Illinois State >1 Nurserymen's Association Every good gardener enjoys the aroma of a summer herb garden, ,,, and has lingered to 1 smell the scent of roses , growing plants for fragrance is no longer restricted to simple j. herb gardens or a ' limited variety of roses. , It's an art that can provide many hours of <, pleasure, as well as 0 some very useful plants. " Growing plants for ' fragrance can be ,} visually appealing, too. ' This information from the Illinois State Nur serymen's association suggests plants that can be grown for fragrance, -, and provides some tips on how to plant and use ! them. One of the more common uses for fragrant plants is in cooking. Many herbs, such as savory, mint. . rosemary and oregano have been grown in * kitchen gardens since medieval times. Now, r, as then, a fresh snip of your favorite herb can • enhance the flavor of your meals, or be dried for use next winter. Unlike medieval kitchen gardens, which were hid from general view and , planted with minimal artistry, your herbs can be grown as borders for flower beds, in pots, or as edging along paths or b e t w e e n s t e p p i n g stones. Select according to your culinary needs, • and ask your local ISNA member to recommend - the best types for your soil and climate. 'Of course, there are many plants which can be grown for their f r a g r a n c e a l o n e , ' s u g g e s t s * I S N A president, John Heaton. 'And, whether you i choose to enjoy them outdoors in your yard or / bring cut specimens into the house, they will serve both purposes well,' he adds. For example, the Japanese i tree lilac and the more common French lilac create huge** jarful blossoms and produce a heady aroma powerful enough to fill a large room or a good size yard. A relative of , familiar'snowball bush' or the Korean spice. v i b u r n u m c a n b e ) p l a n t e d n e x t t o t h e , house by a window so that, when its flowers J are in full bloom and the j weather gets warmer, , you can open the win dow and let the spring > breeze bring its sweet aroma in as well. The honeysuckle vine, an old and reliable friend, has been perfuming our early summer days and evenings for decades. Three of the magnolia family are particularly f r a g r a n t s u m m e r flowering trees. The pink to purple saucer and .white star magnolias produce an abundance of blushing aroma in the spring which may last for a few days up to two weeks or so. The sweetbay magnolia, a semi evergreen, will produce superbly fragrant and m o r e b e a u t i f u l blossoms periodically all summer long. The' sweetbay, however, will survive from central Illinois south-only. There are countless other trees, shrubs and flowers which will add fragrance to your yard and home throughout the summer. The spring-blooming crabapple tree makes an excellent con tribution to your aromatic landscape,/ The mock orange is good, too, but be sure you get the right one since not all are the fragrant variety. Then there are possibilities like sweet shrub, bayberry, spice bush, or ' he lemon, nutmeg and apple-scented geraniums which can offer a scent for nearly every preference or occasion. •s No discussion of fragrant plants would be complete without the rose. Used in perfume making tor centuries, tl)e rose has been the subject of more poetry, music and painting than any other plant in the history of humanity. Over the years, rose growers began . to cultivate and breed roses for their shape and color. i
