Moses was furious with both his brother Aaron and the people of Israel Up on the mountaintop he had re ceived from the lord the tab lets of the Ten Command ments But when he returned to the Israelite encampment at the foot of the mountain, he found that in his absence the people wete worshipping a golden calf I hey had made Could he not leave them for a few days without them fait ing away from God? And his brother--of all the people he had trusted and upon whom he had depended -had help ed them do this terrible thing You Know the People! But perhaps Moses was too hard on Aaron. After all, he had simply done what the great majority of people wanted. As their religious leader next to Moses himself did they not have a tigh' to expect that Aaron would le present their point of view? "Let not the anger of my L ord burn hot," said Aaron to Moses, "you know the people, that they are set on evil." The golden calf had been the people's choice. It would have been an im pressive argument to make to Moses: Aaron had only acted according 10 <he ex pressed will of the people It isan argument thai is still us ed today when people feel the expressed views of their religious leadets do not re flect theii own. It is not un usual today to find a congre gation wanting to be rid of their pastor because he or she expresses viewpoints not shared by the majorit v of the congregation Bishop James 1 homas of the United States Methodist Church once said: "There are some things in religion that are not votable." Reve lation from (iod does not re sult from a concensus of those to whom it is given. Moses brought the Ten Com mandments down from the mountain, not for a vote by the people of Israel, but for their acceptance as obedient savants of the Lord Jesus did not ask for a hand-vote to ratify the Sermon on the Mount--and it's just as v/ell he didn't! Whose Priesthood? If the people had felt brave mwhtfa™?* up,%h^, es, fney might have tolanim that their priest, Aaron, had only done what they wanted him to do. If they had, Moses would have told them in no uncertain words that Aaron was not their priest. For God had been very specific he was consecrated "for my priest hood." The people had not selected Aaron. He was call ed by God and the people had only accepted Aaron as God's priest. And so it was to be with all the priests of Israel and, in fact, all who arc call ed to be spokespersons for God In the life of a religious group, democratic rule is greatly to be desired. There are many aspects of a congre gation's life that should be attuned to the will of the ma jority. But when a person dares to speak for God as his spokesperson, he or she must do so with a full knowledge and acceptance of ihv fact that the message is chosen by God and is not necessarily the people's choice (Rasrd nn outlines copyrighted hv >hr I >ivi\mn : •-I 51 * i 4 •~k l «ud S1 ' 3 RESIDENTIAL / FARMS/ INDUSTRIAL/APPRAISALS HARDING REAL ESTATE Call 815/338-3850 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEfl£_ ROUTE 47 & CALHOUN 51KEET WOODSTOCK, ILLINOIS MCMtCR WOODSTOCK MULTIPLE LISTING •These prices good through month of May, 1983 Financing available through McHenry State Bank McHenry, Illinois Vci CONSUMER V CHECKLIST v-- ~x i f I i : Car Wash ] A laundry prewash will take those tar spots off your car's finish.
