The awards, named for the late American Theater Wing executive Antoinette Perry, go to those performers who made the footlights shine a little bit brighter --• even in this dismal season. This year's leading contenders are British director Trevor Nunn and tap-dancing Texan Tommy Tune, Nunn's "Cats," based on T.S. Eliot's poetry, garnered 11 nominations and his staging of "All's Well ThAt Ends Well," landed him another six. Nunn, you'll recall, won a Tony last year for co-directing the marathon Dickensian production, "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickle- by." The 6-foot-6-inch Tune has three nominations (actor, co-director and co-choreographer) for "My One and Only," the musical co-starring former model Twiggy. He's credited with successfully restructuring the musical after it nearly closed on the road. Tune won a 1982 Tony for best director in a musical for his work on "Nine." In the non-musical category, nominations go to Lanford Wilson's "Angels Fall," Marsha Norman's Pulitzer Prize- winning " 'night, Mother," David Hare's "Plenty" and Harvey Fierstein's "Torch Song Trilogy." In addition to "Cats" and "My One and Only," nomi nees for best musical are Doug Henning's "Merlin" and "Blues in the Night." The latter is a curious choice -- and indicative of the slim pickings this theater season -- since the musical, starring Leslie Uggams, had an extremely short run. "My One and Only" may be a sentimental favorite -- the musical is based on the works of composer George Gershwin, who, along with his brother, Ira, will be honored during this year's broadcast. Broadway's Uris Theater, where this year's ceremonies will originate, will officially be renamed the Gershwin at the conclusion of the broadcast. The careers of the Gershwins will also serve as the awards ceremony's theme. Throughout the evening, an ensemole of stars will perform Geshwin selections. ©1M3 Compulog
