PAGE 22 MEDIA MONITOR McShane bares all about axed 'Essence' By Joan Crosby Even though his series "Bare Essence" had just been canceled after 11 episodes, Ian McShane was smiling. FRIDAY, JUNE 10 03 How oil Hvo-O 0D odd Coupi* 60 Cotflm 11:30 PM o CD "It's all right, love." says the charming British actor, who played Niko Theo- philus, a conniving Greek shipping tycoon on the NBC serial. The conclusion of the series airs Monday, June 13 as a two-hour TV movie, "Bare Essence: The Final Chapter." "Next year there will probably be a miniseries called 'The Best of Bare Essence,' and 10 years from now, it will be a cult series." McShane offered this post-mortem: "We certain ly needed better writing and more delineation of character. They would bring in characters who were confusing. Also, the network changed the time slots, so the audience felt confused and they felt we wouldn't make it."' When "Bare Essence" began, the serial focused on the lives and loves of women perfume execu tives, but as the season wore on, McShane's char acter became more domi nant. On the show, he got to say lines like "I could popu late a Greek fishing village with my illegitimate offspr ing." That remark was made to a woman who told him he should marry her because he had made her pregnant. "I loved saying lines." he says. those Ian McShano 0D Lavoma A SMftoy A Co. © Night Trocfct ® Uo Dotoctor 12:00 AM o Hmy/M SCTV O ABC Now* Oim on On* I Kodak'* Homo DyiMmki CD MO VIS: 'Lo»t Chow' @9 Hoctrk ftluo QD Mary Hartman, Mary t tollman SCablo HoaHh World Roport MOVIC: •Woman Noxt Door' CD 3® Lau«h Trax CD MOVII: 'Ai*oi of HJ.A.T.' He can now be seen in the current film "Exposed," and will be in "The Doorman," direct ed- by Tony Lo Bianco. He's also ready to return to working on stage. He appeared in Los Angeles last year (with Per)ny Fuller and Lawrence Pressman) in Harold Pinter's "Betrayal" in an Equity-waiver theater (which means none of the actors got paid for their work). For that perform ance. he won a Los Ange les Drama Critics Circle Award. McShane. who became a permanent resident of Hol lywood two years ago, is married to American actress Gwen Humble. After shuttling for many years between Hollywood and Europe, he now says the advantage of living in the States is that here he can combine stage, film and TV work. © By Lillian Bono ABIES- A^aSnir $tro\/ue By Lillian Bono Wttk ot Jun» 5-Junt 11 (March 21-April 20) Friends could hurt your reputation to the point where your job may be on the Hne.
