For instance -- meeting somebody in a doctors office and asking "How are you?" Here's another. You tell somebody about a person being ill and up pops the question, "What's the matter with him (or her)? I never know. It could be iron poor blood. They told a story years ago about one of my late uncles. It seems an old man died and an elderly woman asked my uncle, "What did he die of?" "Shortness of breath", came the answer. "That was it, was it", said herself. One time I thought it was a charley horse that hit my right leg. Couldn't kick it out so went to see a doctor. Thrombosis was the diagnosis. Dumb like, I asked if that was a blood clot. Sure enough. After a few weeks, I attempted to climb the steps at the old court house in Woodstock. Half way up, I stopped to rest. A woman coming down the steps quizzed me to a point where there was no way but to tell her my ailment. Shocked, she exclaimed, "Oh, my God!" 4 Snapping her fingers, she went on, "That's what my sister had and she went out just like that." Amused, I took the rest of the steps in good shape. If you phone me, don't hang up so soon. It takes a little time to hoist myself out of the chair and get into gear. "Do you remember the ragmen?", came the question. Oh, sure. My earliest recollection was bf an old fellow who was located at the southeast corner of Front and John Streets. With a horse drawn wagon, he drove around yelling, "Rags, old iron". Kids picked up items and took them to the ragman to get a little change for candy or a nickel ice cream cone. When the notice came out about the city Clean-Up Week and our section was referred to as the old part of town, some people took exception to the reference. My reply was we really are a part of the old part of town and proud of it. At least we are one of the old parts. Being the last section on the list seemed to be what pulled their cork. So -- maybe we will be first on the list next year. Harry Stilling, now a Wisconsinite, paid us a short visit Sunday. He still gets the Plaindealer and enjoys certain parts. He can't keep up to all the new names. Who can? Dill Dumalski is sure the Cubs will play in the World Series this year and says they will rent Soldier Field. Being an old flyer, maybe the, altitude got to him. My mother used to measure out coffee with this formula, a tablespoon for each cup and add one for the pot. Charlie Diedrich says this column backs him up when he tells doubting young people of the way things were in earlier days. I'm sure our editor will cover the highly successful McHenry Day at the Historical Society Museum in Union. I don't want to duplicate the report, but want to slip in a word of praise for Nancy Fike. She led the way and acknowledged help from several in our community. We had a great day. MYSTERY CAR Credit OLD CARS WEEKLY with the picture and information shown below. Mary Lou Kinnerk received the clipping in the mail from ex- McHenryite John LaBarbara and turned it in to Wayne Gaylord, Plaindealer photographer and car v r , ' . » State Finances Show ' Little Improvement The available balance in the General Funds at the end of May was $24 million, said Comptroller Roland W. Burris. That $24 million month-end balance was: - $171 million less than the same date one year ago. -The lowest end-of-May balance in the last 30 years (the previous low was $24.5 million at the end of May 1962). -The 22nd consecutive month-end balance below the $200 million "warning zone" level. -The eighth time this fiscal year the month-end balance has been below $100 million and the third time in fiscal 1983 the end-of-the-month figure has been below $30 million. Burris said that total general fund revenues for the eleven month period were $7,545 billion, only $3 million or 0.04 pd-cent above the ll-month total last year. Total general fund ex penditures for the period were $7,708 billion, $164 million or 2.2 percent higher than one year ago. The state has thus spent $163 million more than its income in the period. The Comptroller said that revenues from state sources were up $77 million or 1.2 percent over last year, but that gain was primarily the result of transfers of $102 million from other state funds. He also noted significant declines in two basic revalue sources: a $72 million decrease in corporate tax receipts and a $41 million drop in investment income. • - y. :* i Revenues from Federal sources in the ll-month period were down $74 million or 5.6 percent below last year's level. McHENRY MARKET PLACE PHONE 385-4100 spurgeons WHO'S THAT BEHIND THOSE FEDERAL MONIES Illinois recently received federal apportionments totaling $2,892,839, which will be used in maintaining and improving the state's wildlife and fishery resources and for hunter education. David Kenney, director of the Illinois Department of Con servation, explained that this sum is the total apportionment for 1983. The money was raised by an excise tax paid by sportspersons on hunting and fishing equipment. A prize for everyone will be the order of the day at the Kids Dog show to be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18 at Petersen park. All McHenry area children between the ages of 4 and 14 who have a dog are invited to enter. Any dog may com pete, regardless of breed, pedigree or professional training, provided it is at least six months old. The show gives children the op portunity to learn responsible dog ownership while having fun parading their canine friends. Judging categories are best behaved, funniest, best trick, smallest dog, largest dog, best looking, and Best of Show. First, second and third prize ribbons will be awarded to winners in each category, with a Best of Show to be selected from the first place winners. In addition, each en trant will receive a merit award ribbon. Entry blanks for the Kids Dog Show are available at city hall. Preregistration is required and will be accepted up until Wednesday, June 15. j' • • SUMMER ART The City of McHenry Department of Parks & Recreation is also starting a new porgram this year entitled "Summer Art".
