How can we increase our lev el of health and wellness? A. Wellness is accepting res ponsibility for your health ^and well-being and then sys tematically eliminating nega tive aspects of your life style. Experts have estimated that 85 percent of all health mat ters can be controlled by each of us. First, cut down on cigar ettes. A 50-year-old smoker who has smoked a pack or more a day for 30 years will die eight to nine years sooner than a nonsmoker. Second, limit your alcohol to two ounces or less per day. Exces sive alcohol ruins the liver and destroys good nutrition. Third, shed those extra po unds. Being overweight by 20 percent dramatically in creases your chances of dying at an earlier age. Fourth, run for your life. Some form of daily exercise reduces the risk of heart disease and helps keep your weight down. (Be fore beginning such 20 min ute doses of vigorous exer cise, however, discuss your plans with your physician.) Fifth, cut down your stress level before it elevates your blood oressure. After you've taken stock of these five areas, set realis tic goals and write them down. Don't try to change everything at once. Calling Colleen DEATHS 6/15-6/17 ADVERSE AFFECT Governor Thompson has warned that without the funds that would be generated by his four- year financial plan for I l l ino i s , s evera l programs would be adversely affected. Among those programs are the Illinois Arts Council, income support under the general assistance program, help for the develop- menta l ly d i sab led , funding for day care centers, employment of child abuse workers, funding for the Guar dianship and Advocacy commission and the existence of local revenue sharing, Afl- . ditionally, the governor said, the bills in troduced in the legislature this session contain nearly $633 million in new- ap propriations the state cannot afford and another $540 million in overappropriations for new or continued programs that cannot be supported without new revenues. Dear Colleen: Why do couples who adopt infants believe they should keep the adoption a secret forever? I recently heard of a case where a man forty-two years of age learned for the first time that he was adopt ed when he was less than one year old. It would seem to me that people who adopt children when they are in fants should be required, when these children reach a certain age, to tell them the identity of their true parents. Jack DearJack: There may be some merit in what you believe, but it would take the wisdom of Solomon to decide the age at which a particular boy or girl would be ready to adjust to the news that the mom and dad they had known all their lives were not true parents. I have known instances where children who were told early in life that they were adopted made remarkable adjust ments, but it doesn't always work this way. Sometimes, unpleasant and distressing confrontations occur when a true parent decides he or she wants the return of a child they gave.up for adoption years ago. This occurrence is particularly distressing when the child has come to love the only couple he or she knows as mom and dad. I don't know much about a- doption laws and they prob ably differ among the states. Had I been an adopted child, I believe I would have wanted to know somewhere down the line, but I don't know when I would have been ready to accept the news. Dear Colleen: Beer and liquor were once outlawed. Is it likely that one day all this fuss about "pot" will die down and it will be come legal? Sammy Pear Sammy: Who can say? In some areas of the country, people have run forpublic office on a platform to legalize pot. But, again, some people wo uld still outlaw beer and bour bon if.they could.
