The bride wore an empire silhouette gown, flowing into a chapel length train. The bodice featured an open neckline enhanced with Belgium and Venice lace, and Queen Anne sleeves. The skirt was adorned with Venice lace motifs and edged in Belgium lace. Silk flowers on the shoulder and train added a touch of elegance. Graef, on his twenty-fifth year in the Holy Ministry. In order to have the family all together on that day, and still keep everything a surprise, they were told something special was being planned for his birthday, which was June 12. After stepping out to the altar, he observed his daughter Kathy being escorted down the aisle to be seated with the rest of the family. The committee had her flown in from North Carolina and kept her in hiding until the time of service. A former classmate of Pastor Graef, the Reverend David Walker of Mount Prospect, preached the ser mon; the Reverend James Teasdale, who will become the new associate pastor at Zion next month, was the lector; the Reverend W. H. Wetzstein, pastor emeritus was the liturgist; and special music was provided by the choir. After services, about 275 guests attended a catered dinner at the American Legion hall. Highlights of the event including Mayor Stanek; cassette tapes relaying messages from classmates and family; a reading of letters from the Synod president, Dr. Ralph Bohlman; and district president, the Rev. E. H. Happel; and a congratulatory telegram from Governor Thompson. A Book of congratulatory letters from classmates was also presented to Pastor Graef, along with a large plaque, noting his 25 years in the ministry and 15 years at Zion Lutheran church. The special surprise of the af ternoon was the presentation of tickets for an all expense paid trip to the Holy Land for Pastor Graef and his wife Irene. During his college years, Pastor Graef became interested in work among deaf mutes and spent some time serving in deaf missions. He later authored several tracts for the deaf and a religious workbook for deaf children.
