Vietnam veterans from the Rockford area were guests Monday, June 27, at the monthly meeting of the McHenry county chapter of VietNow. Their topic was "Agent Orange", the toxic herbicide with trace amounts of Dioxin, exposure to which has belatedly caused serious emotional and physical problems for numbers of Vietnam soldiers. The local chapter of VietNow started a year ago as an extension of the founding Rockford chapter. Based on the purpose of "Veterans Helping Veterans", the organization currently has about 60 members representing many walks of life. Meetings are held regularly on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in St. John's Lutheran church, Woodstock. Weekly rap sessions led by Vietnam veteran and therapist, Alan Belcher of Woodstock, take place at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Court Services building. There the veterans are encouraged to talk out their shared concerns and problems. For Bob Schreiner of Woodstock, who returned from Vietnam combat in 1971, these sessions are one of the most helpful programs of VietNow. "We recognized that problems existed buiiding~ - Only for 10 years we couldn't talk about them, and now we can," he explained. Other aims of VietNow are lobbying for veteran benefits, the MIA-POW program and public awareness. "We just can't let people forget," said Vice-President Jack Wojewoda of Crystal Lake. The VietNow chapter marched as a unit for the first time at the recent Memorial day parade in Crystal Lake. "It was a good feeling," Wojewoda said, "because we felt proud again." Statistics indicate over 50,000 Americans were killed in the Vietnam • conflict, and 60,000 veterans have committed suicide since then - three times the national average. "We want people to know there is free help out there," Wojewoda assured. Everyone interested is welcome at the meeting and rap sessions of VietNow. The mailing address is P.O. Box 825LWoodstock, 60098, or call 455- 2810. Dennis Korzuchowski of McHenry is president. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United Slates.
