The ever popular Art and his ever nice-to-meet wife Glo, came up smiling after anxious days. Looking out into the bade forty, the wood pile strikes me as a useless item in this 90 degree weather. I have an alarm clock on the stand beside my bed that is seldom alarming. Last week that old clunker was gaining 15 minutes a day. This week, without any adjustment, it is right on the button. A crazy clock. Liz Nolan's reports (Mi DIVOT DOLLS reveals some strange and rare happenings -- and some nifty > golfing. I follow reports of lady golfers and wonder if the men don't have anything good to report. Remember way back last winter when I moaned about having to put on an overcoat and pull on boots before going outside? 1 missed Ann Sullivan Sowers' column on goings on at Wonder Lake, then found her back in good form after a spell of illness. Stay in there, Ann. We miss you. I read exchange papers from other areas and have also read some reports from way back. The danger to bicycle riders has been a problem for long time. When a young boy cut through a filling station and right in front of me on the highway, my heart flipped a couple of extra beats. When adult riders sailed' right through a stop sign at Green and Pearl, 1 decided we can't put all the blame on young kids. The Fourth of July is iust around the deadlii comer of another line. In my day, kids always fdt their vacation was going down hill after the big holiday. There was always a carnival and special baseball game on the Fourth. No mention has been made of the miraculous curative power of a cup of steaming Hot Toddy. "It was Grandma's remedy. It did not stop the pain, it just took the mind off of it. "Like to be helpful, "K. Brown" Dear K., You are certainly helpful. A struggling young columnist always needs hdp and encouragement. You were lucky. My Grandma rubbed goose grease on my chest and them. They weren't as high as the modem wheels. Never found out who was responsible for the long count ride I endured at the County Fair in Woodstock when our children were small. Sitting between the two children, I must have had the longest ride in history. Every time we came down to a point where it was our turn to get off, the attendant would send us around again. I hollered at him, but the man at the controls looked the other way. No doubt somebody slipped the control man a tip to take me for the ride. A couple of friends I accused acted as innocent as little babies. In an effort to avoid inter- subdivision rivalry, the Wonder Lake Master Property Owners association board of directors voted to use $2,000 donated by Wonder Lake State bank for lake beautification toward dredging the Nippersink creek. ; J "We've been dealing in a world of ill feelings for almost two decades now," said master association Secretary Craig Pfannkuche. Allocating money to one subdivision and not another "would open up a can of worms," he said. ; Lake committee Chairman Jack Crawford said bi-monthly tests show the lake's depth has declined eight inches during the last two years. The problem is compounded by low transparency, little oxygen qnd a declining number of game fish. "It used to be 25 feet at the dam, now it's 11 feet," Crawford added "In 20 years you're not going to have anything there. Nothing has been done in the past. Shame on the masters is all I can say." Crawford said the lake committee has learned a silt dam--a large hole in the creek bed--would reduce nutrients and minerals in the water. The dam will be dug the width of the creek and to a depth of 20 feet, west of the bridge near Thompson and Wondermere roads. Crawford added that permission is needed from a property owner and a minimum of $5,000 to move the crane tothe site and get the digging started. The cost of the entire project will be $16,000, with work slated to begin in October. The directors voted to lower the lake between four and five feet between Oct. 15 and Dec. 1 to facilitate repairs, but withheld money for the moment. The Master association also decided against a winter drawdown, fearing severe cold would kill fish and crack seawalls. - Jim Gunning, chairman of the dam committee, asked for another $4,000 to repair two cracks in the east wingwall. "They've expanded from a ,half inch to two inches," Gunning said. "Preventive protection is the right way to go." Donohue & Associates, Inc., engineering consultants based in Waukesha, Wis., will be called in to inspect the cracks and recommend the best means of repair. It will cost $800 and be taken from $1,700 budgeted in the dam contingency fund. ' ' The Master assodation is seeking to reduce the estimated cost of $500,000 to reinforce the dam with gabions (rock-filled cylinders used in the RINGWOOD NEWS Doris Low 653-9262 Katy Christopher 085-8037 JOHN P. We went to underwater caves and one was where they filmed the James Bond movie, "Thunder Ball". This was really something to see. The weather was great and the water was so clear that it was lots of fun to swim and scuba in. We went by boat (and it was a pretty big boat) from Florida to the islands. We flew by small plane to Florida from the islands and then on home in a big one." "Scott Miller" "One day I was trolling (fishing off a troller or similar big boat) and I was watching my bait and all of a sudden I got a strike (a bite). I saw the head of a Marlin. It was about 900 pounds. I had it for about 10 seconds and he took half of the line I had out, he ran. "I don't see that we can go on and take IDOT'8 (Illinois Department of Transportation) word for it," said William Dicker, delegate from Wonder Center subdivision. "We're getting different figures on differeht dams." Dicker is one of many residents questioning the figure mandated by the state of 62,000 cubic feet per second. Wonder Lake Dam now can withstand 10,000 cubic feet per second. A motion made by Dicker to hire an attorney to look into the matter failed for lack of a second. The Master association is taking a wait and see approach, lobbying legislators and going through political channels. f \ Master association Treasurer Donald Coumbe pointed out an in crease in general dues from $1.50 per lot per acre to $3.50 is needed just to cover administrative, lake and dam expenses. If approved, the increase would net $21,000. Excluding $7,000 interest on the dam repair loan, the 1983 master budget is $20,600. A 50 percent increase in dam dues to $20 was discussed, but no action taken. on July 5; and on July 6,- we find Nancy Bowman, Scott Sonnemaker, Richard Bounds, Jr., Scott Lehman and Charles Olson enjoying their special day.
