Although commencement exercises were held May 15, preparation of diplomas was begun only after all grades were reported and verified. Among those receiving degrees were Robert Adams, 3106 N. MONMOUTH HONORS Two McHenry students, Brent Birkhoff and Gary Selof, were recognized for scholastic achievement at an honors convocation at Monmouth college, Monmouth, 111. Birkhoff received an Emily Roberts. Hubble scholarship and was recognized as a new member of Blue Key, an honor fraternity. Selof was recognized for his par­ ticipation in Alpha Lambda Delta, the national honor fraternity for out­ standing freshman students. Full-time students who have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.4 (4.0 scale) based on 32 or more graded credits and who com­ plete at least 16 credits ̂ during the previous 14-week term are placed on the Carthage Honor list. Dean's list criteria include a minimum term grade point average of 3.5 based upon at least 12 graded credits taken during the term. NIU Names Area Honor Students Northern Illinois university has released the names of local students who qualify for the honor listing with grade point averages from 3.75 to 4.00. McHenry students include Deborah Freund, 3706 Maple avenue; Christian Goetschel, 3714 N. Spring Grove road; Felicia Scavo, 1021W. River Terrace; Celeste Seavey, 5102 Cambridge; Rhonda Sweetwood, 2307 Aloha. From Wonder Lake they are Judy Ham, 7505 North drive; and Cynthia Jensen, 4923 East Lake Shore. Vicki Drews of 37770 Nippersink, Spring Grove, was also included. James Michaels Earns Degree« James P. Michaels, a University of Evansville student from this com­ munity, was among 936 students who received their degrees at UE's 125th commencement exercises. ' Included in this number were 212 students who will complete degree requirements in August. August graduates participated in com­ mencement exercises, but will not receive their degreed until they, have satisfactorily completed the/work. Michaels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Michaels of Holiday Hills, received his Bachelor of Science in Business degree. Sea ton majored in Art. Recognize McHenry Student At Purdue A total of 3,286 Purdue university students received distinguished- student rank for the spring semester of the 1962-83 school year. They represented, scholastically, ap­ proximately the top IS percent of the 25,475 undergraduates on the West 'Lafayette campus during the second semester. ** Among them was Thomas Babb, 907 S. River road, McHenry, in the field of Science. In order to qualify for distinguished ranking, a student must have a grade index erf at least 5.5 (B+) of a possible 6 (A) in no fewer than 14 academic credit hours. The student may have no grade below 4 (C). JOINS FRATERNITY Some 34 students of Marquette university were recently initiated into the Marquette chapter of Beta Alpha. Psi, the National Honorary Ac­ counting fraternity. Initiates .must be jupiors or seniors and are judged on excellence in three categories: scholarship, personality, and professional interest. Anthony C. Pintozzi, 3717 W. High street, McHenry, was among those initiated. Magna Cum Laude Honors Graduate Mona Wheelock Sparks was awarded her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration during commencement, services at Goldey Beacom college in :Wilmington, Dela., June 11. In­ terrupting her studies to be marreid 'and relocated, Mona returned to complete a major in Management with honors of Magna Cum Laude. A graduate of McHenry West campus in 1974, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Wheelock. Area Students Honored At SiU Approximately 2,670 students were posted to the spring semester academic Deans' list at Southern Illinois university-Carbondale. The number represents 14 percent of the undergraduate student body. Deans' List citations go .& students who compile gradepoint averages meeting high performance standards set by SIUC's various schools and colleges. The standards range from 3.35 to 3.75 on a scale of 4.0 (perfect). A total of 940 students on the spring list made "straight A's." Area residents honored were Richard Bierman, 711 S./Cherry Valley; Bruce Brda, 3712 W. Grand; Scott Budaj, 3705 W. Young; James CrosWe, 7406 Ma6on Hill; Robert A. Gran, 2309 W. Wegner, 113 Kohl (straight A) and Raymond Westphal, 37974 N. Watts, all of Spring Grove. Graduate From Chicago College Douglas Sanford, 34565 S. Sequoia, McHenry, and Lars Ullberg, 26911 W. Nippersink, Ingleside, received their bachelor of arts degrees recently at the 93rd Columbia college com­ mencement. The ceremony took place at 8 p.m. in Chicago's Auditorium theatre. At the commencement, Harold Washington, mayor of the city of Chicago, delivered the com­ mencement address and received an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. He is a sophomore with majors in Spanish and sociology. To receive Dean t hst recognition, a student at Monmouth must achieve a grade point average for the term of 3.666 or higher on a four-point scale while carrying a full course load. . . ' • ' . For inclusion on the Dean's list, students must achieve a 3.5 or better grade point average out of a possible 4.0. CARTHAGE GRADUATE Carthage college graduated 260 candidates for the bachelor of arts and 27 candidates for the master in education degree at its 109th annual commencement ceremony May 22 in the Physical Education center at the college. Among those to be awarded degrees was James L. Straulin, 1215 Quincy street, McHenry,who received a Bachelor of Arts degree. His inajor was business administration..
