N Hearing Test Sponsored Deaf persons are the least un derstood of the handicapped populations because deafness is not visible. Many of the problems of the deaf and hearing impaired would be alleviated with increased un derstanding of deafness on the part of the general public. To help increase public awareness not only of the problems of deafness but also of the capabilities of the deaf and hearing impaired, and to safeguard 'hr hearing of the public through an aiiy warning system, the Lions Clubs of Illinois sponsor free hearing screenings for persons 21 years old and older in communities throughout the state; As part of that progran , the Island Lake Lions Club will sponsor a screening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tues. July 12, at Rt. 176 and Woodlawn in Island Lake. UJLCE ĴoCd !Z7 FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 6, 1933) Six armed masked bandits held up the "Pit" located east of McHenry on Route 20 and carried away loot estimated at from $600 to $800. The place was filled with about 20 patrons when the robbers walked in. They appeared to be experienced, although young and were all tall and lanky wearing black handkerchief masks and carrying guns also covered with black cloths. Terror reigned in the Fox river valley as a cyclone swept across fertile fields and sleeping cities, having devastated homes and caused damage estimated at two million dollars. While McHenry and surrounding country escaped ̂ un damaged, yet the great force of the storm was felt here and the high wind left streets and lawns strewn with broken tree branches. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 8, 1933) Those who heard the fine concert by the city band on the evening of July 4 on the Legion carnival grounds will be sure to be on hand July 9, when the band presents its first concert in the city park. Among the many fine numbers to be played on the program will be tne beautiful "Night In June", the rousing "Anchors Aweigh", and the lovely waltz, "Alpine Sunset". A daughter was born July 5 at the Woodstock hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Edward Thennes. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Covalt, Jr., announced the birth of a daughter July 3 at a Chicago hospital. Our up-and-coming, can't -lose-for- winning Shamrocks went through nine rather tense innings when they handed Woodstock its first defeat, 2 to 1. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 10,1958) Miss Nancy Thornton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Thornton of Pistakee Bay, was chosen Fiesta queen. Miss Judy Hans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hans of Pistakee Bay, and Miss Judy Baur, daughter of the Alvin Baurs of McHenry, were runners-up and form the queen's court when she reigns over Fiesta Day, July 20. One of the highlights of McHenry's first Fiesta Day will be the second annual Rotary Rodeo, which begins July 18, and runs through July 20. The location will be the same as last year, at Eastwood Manor, one mile east of the city of Rt. 120. Mayor Freund will officiate at the Old Settlers program to be given early in the ev«aing <at thecityiparknon Fiesta Day. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 3, 1973) Miss Kim Karlson, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Karlson of Wonder Lake, was selected Miss Wonder Lake before an en thusiastic audience at Nativity Lutheran church, Wonder Lake. Mayor Joseph Stanek proclaimed July 4 as Bells on Independence Day in McHenry. It was on July 4, 1963, that bells were rung throughout the United States for the first time in observance of National Independence as the result of a project originated by two citizens of Connecticut. In com memoration of Independence Day, the proclamation asks that bells be rung from "every church, school, factory and firehouse. It will be a return to "Soaring, Roaring 'Twenties" when McHenry holds its annual Marine Festival Week festivities this month. Visitors will join McHenry's population of 7,680 on July 15, in the annual salute to this special day. BANQUETS WELCOMED! Weddings, Showers. Graduations. Anniversaries.
