Starring Christopher Reeve. Richard Pry or, Annette O'Toole. Rated 'PG.' * * By J.T. YURKO Putting comedian Richard Pryor in a "Superman" movie seemed like it would be a great idea. As the arch-villain Lex Luthor in the previous "Super man" movies, Gene Hackman played his role with a tongue- in-cheek attitude that ranged from high camp to outright comedy. With Pryor's talents and the usual array of special effects. "Superman III" had the powers to be far beyond that of a normal summer But it was not to be. This Man-^pf Steel movie is little more than a lightweight con tender against other summer blockbusters such as "Return of the Jedi" and "WarGames." The script is weak, the effects are tame and Pryor's ample talent^ are largely untapped. "Superman" is a comic book adventure, but the first two movies carefully sides tepped being childish in their approaches. Not so in this film, as even the pre-credit sequence demonstrates. It's pure slapstick, simple-minded mayhem that actually ends with a pie in the face David and Leslie Newman return as screenwriters in this episode, but missing from the writing credits is Mario Puzo. Perhaps the heavy hand of the man who wrote "The Godfa ther" is needed. The story nev er seems to get off the ground. As in "WarGames," com puters are this movie's villain. But the script calls for Pryor to be a computer genius who matches wits with the Man of Steel. Pryor is too lovable to be a villain, and Robert Vaughn and Annie Ross are too campy to be a threat to anyone over the age of 7. Together they do manage to build' a master mega-comput er, and thus give some work to the special effect? people, but it comes too late in the film to pose la genuine threat to a happy ending. Along the way. Superman (as Clark Kent) goes back to bis home town of Smallville and gets smitten by the former high-school prom queen. Lana Larig (Annette O'Toole). Has Clark forsaken Lois Lane in favor of Lana? Only an inevita ble "Superman IV" will tell. ©IMS Compulog
