For the sum of 25 cents, Darlene Michelson bought a fancy little box at a rummage sale. It was a real pleasure to join Elvera Durland, her family and friends in the City Park Saturday afternoon. Was thi? an event? Boy, was it! This was the honored guest's 90th birthday. We are pleased to count Elvera Durland as a true friend. As Georgie Gobel would describe her--"They don't hardly make those kind no more". Inside that little box are some old deeds that go back to the Civil War days. One of the highlights of the celebration was the singing of "Happy Birthday, Nana" by her great grandch i ld ren . ' * »« . Ninety years. That goes back before the turn of the century. A 90th birthday must be great when you can stay as sharp as Elvera Durland and enjoy the sincere love of so many. Admiration was evident for this good, intelligent Christian woman. Albert Stilling read about"Fishhook Joe" Miller and told me of helping assemble those famous fly swatters. Al's brother John operated a gasoline station on Elm St. and found space for Joe to manufacture fly swatters and fishhooks--his own patents. We are still trying to gather more history on Joe. Had a good chat with Wally Smith at the Durland shin-dig. I'll never forget him as a slick-fielding, hard-hitting first baseman for the Johns burg Tigers. Wally never lets me forget the time Letters and miscellaneous cards are also in the box. Very interesting, but names I'll skip. Think we entered Bimbo's just in time Sunday night to give Dick Smith some support. Looking up from his chow, Fred' Meyer hollered, "Here's a Cub fan". That started the ball a-rolling. With the Cubs on a winning streak, Eddie Bimbo was all smiles. Earlier in the season he wasn't such a happy fellow. Quite an evening. Gordon Ropp, Bloomington, has introduced this proposal which, if enacted, would in effect increase the nutrient value of most ingredients by 21 percent with a less than 9 percent increase in cost. Increased food value of protein, calcium and potassium would result if the bill is adopted into law. Explained Bill Olbrich, Harvard farmer who said AMPI and McHenry County Farm Bureau as organizations support-the proposal: "The consumer would get a much better buy, a more nutritious product, and a better tasting product." The bill would increase the solids- not-fat in whole milk from 8.25 percent to 8.7 percent, low fat milk (1 and 2 percent milk) from 8.25 percent to 10 percent, skim or non-fat milk from 8.25 percent to 9 percent. Rep. Ropp said the proposal would improve taste and quality and at the same time reduce the costs incurred by the federal government through CCC purchase under the dairy price support program. House Bill 825 would not go into effect until 1985 so other areas of the country can update their standards, explained Walter Kirchner, general manager for AMPI. Wisconsin is working on amending their standards. California has had similar standards for more than a decade. S.O.S. Club Aids Suicide Families The newly formed McHenry county organization for Survivors of Suicide, or S.O.S., will be having its bi-monthly meeting July 11 and July 28 at 8 p.m. at the offices of McHenry County Youth Service bureau located at 4719 W.
