McHenry residents joined in with the entire country celebrating the nation's 157th birthday. At the regular meeting of the City Council a discussion was brought up about putting up drinking fountains in various locations. It was learned that boys had put a cannon firecracker in one of the fountains, completely destroying it, and another had been hit by an automobile. It was decided by the board that it was not practical to maintain the fountain service. George Larkin received a broken nose when he slipped while loading milk cans. His foot slipped as he stood on the edge of a truck and he fell u striking his nose against the edge of a milk can. SAFETY HINTS BYSECRETARY OF STATE JIM EDGAR Children under age 6 now must ride in ap proved safety seats or safety belts, or parents can be fined under a tough new law signed by Governor Thompson. Between 1975 and 1981, 140 children under age 5 died and nearly 26,000 were significantly injured in auto ac cidents in Illinois, ac cording to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The new law requires that children through age 3 be strapped into safety seats meeting federal standards while traveling in the family car. Children 4 and 5 must be in safety seats or restrained by safety belts. Parents or guardians who fail to obey the law will be fined a maximum of $25 for a first offense. However, the penalty can be waived if parents show in court that they possess an approved seat. A second violation could bring a fine of up to $50. The Illinois Depart ment of Transportation conducts a Safety Seat Distribution program, which provides a list of fcg«nefegKfcat<htf*«>tMild restraint safety seat loaner-rental-sell-at- . cost programs currently active in Illinois.
