PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JULY 2t, IMS EARL WALSH" So I Hear Was there ever a Back Street in McHenry? Sure wast Those who don't date back so far in MeHenry's history wouldn't be ex pected to know. Look at an old map and you will see it leading from Elm, first lot east of the Richmond Road Standard station, all the way to Washington St. It was a 66' street that was vacated many years ago. To answer another question - standard lots were 66'xl32' as shown on the original plat of McHenry. There are {daces I like to visit. Needing some help on McHenry history, I called on Frank Gans. As Frank, Avis and I sat in a room that takes my farcy, we watched the slowed down boats go by. Sometimes I get so comfortable and enjoy a visit so much that it takes a derrick to get me up. The letter came in the mail, telling me I am a valued customer and am in line for a free gift. Read on. If I don't place an order now, my name will be taken off their mailing list. Say it isn't so! • It may be a big mistake, but I agreed to go to Wrigley Field this week with a carload of Cub fans. If I survive, you will get a full report. Don't hold me responsible for what happens to the next guy who asks, "Is it warm enough for you?" The heat sometimes gets to a fellow, so I'm proud of not blowing my stack when a young driver cut in frnnt of my ir>* NEW! Seafood Salad *2.49 r i • • i • i • i car and gave me a look that said, "What are you doing here?" We didn't have any cement pavement to buckle up during heat waves in the old days, but tar sidewalks got sticky. Walking on oiled streets put a real coating on bare feet. It took all winter to get your feet back to normal. Arnold Rauen wait golfing in 95 degree weather Friday, playing 18 holes. Worse - he planned to go out again Saturday. What I think, I'm not going to put in print. Remember way bade when it used to rain? (If the rains come before this goes to press, forget it.) On the way up to Ringwood Saturday evening for the church chicken dinner, I thought we were goofy to sit out in that heat. SURPRISE! A breeze came across the plains like God was smiling on the group. They must pray right up there. Missed our McHenry High schoolmate, Arlene Pearson, as we entered the church ground. I used to make remarks about her getting the job of taking in the money. 11 WITH COG PON 11 Thai, I lotted around and thought it was impossible not to see my friend Paul Walkington. He was there and came around to say hello. Met Dr. and Mrs. Ruggero and mentioned how I enjoyed dining places where I knew people. "Hate to go to a restaurant where I don't know anybody," I remarked. Mrs. Ruggero put me on the spot, mentioning that I had my wife for company - then enjoyed watching me squirm. A great one, that lady. ' Alice Peet, ticket seller deluxe and a tireless water, took great care of us. Had a good visit with Elroy "Fit*' Fitzgerald, sports official and scout looking for baseball players with potential big league quality I first knew "Fitz" when he was a catcher for a slugging Algonquin team. He caught double-headers in weather like we have been trying to endure. A rugged guy! "Fitz" grew up on a farm and his memory goes back to days before modern machinery took over. Somebody asked him and he remembers when farmers "checked" corn when planting. Rows lined up in every direction, especially if you had a steady team of horses. My son is 24 years old. His fa ther was a big "kidder," but he only stretched the truth. My son told his friends at col lege he was rich, owned an airplane and lived in a man- > sion. Dear Colleen: A few months ago, a young couple with a small child moved into a house down the road that had been vacant for many years. We met them-- once--but have seen them only twice since then. They both work and apparently take the child to a sitter When you live next door to someone and don't see them for days on end, you betin to worry if something has gone wrong and they need help.
