That is about one-half the conventional growing time. Etes has also grown cucumbers and tomatoes that taste as though they were Just picked in your back yard; and you can have them year around. Hydroponic tomato plants can conceivably produce for up to 18 months. The next step in MCC's hydroponic research will be to try growing, dif ferent crops. Etes says snap peas, Chinese cabbage, carrots and vegetables unavailable or otherwise very costly out of season are feasible. Testing of environmental changes on plants and varying nutrient solutions are also planned, as is an experiment grafting disease and insect prone cucumbers on more resistant squash roots. Etes feels the possibilities are unlimited, that he has only scratched the surface in his research. He adds,, "It is conceivable to ultimately alter the course of a plant. By increasing or decreasing the amont of nitrogen a plant gets it is possible to control whether the plant or the fruit grows." He expects hydroponics in this country to move from essentially amateur status at present to big business in a few years as natural resources become more scarce and energy costs become more of a factor. Etes' successful research project growing vegetables in the greenhouse in a nutrient solution rather than outdoors in soil is attracting the attention of businesses and scholars alike. 2 Call Weekdays j Saturdays 8 to 3 Sundays 10 to 2 • 385-0856 OR 728-0205 structor at MCC and supervisor of the project, puts it, "No (me is on the fence regarding hydroponics. They are either very much for it or against it." a A lot of the controversy stems from the fact that there is no margin for error in hydroponics. One Is either very successful or very unsuccessful. The process requires an intensive management program. According to Etes there are a number of books on the subject, but McHenry County college Argriculture student Don Etes' research project investigating growing vegetables hydroponically is attracting both county and academic attention. Hydroponics involves the growth of plants in a greenhouse environment using a nutrient solution rather than a conventional soil medium. It is a field that attracts con troversy as well as enthusiasm.
