Shaw/Free Press Media Group, inc. 1983 Fair Guide--Page 77 & projects By Cliff Ward Shaw /Free Press Media WOODSTOCK -- What do "Windy City Woman," "Raging Apache," "Madame X" and "Jeannie C. Riley" all have in common? If you don't recognize the names of the first three, suffice to say they do something for a living that would probably shock the Harper Valley PTA. The women are a part of the Chicago Knockers Mud Wrestlers team which will headline the grandstand during the McHenry County Fair on Friday, Aug. o Country singer Riley will play the same grandstand one night later. Mud wrestling may seem like an unusual attraction for an event like the county fair, with its traditional emphasis on agricultural events. But according to team co-owner Lynn Brown, mud wrestling is catching on at fairs nationwide. "We did 80 fairs last year, and we'll do 125 this year," Brown said, adding that the group is already booked for some 1984 fairs. That's not bad for a group that's only been in existence for four and one-half years and has already played such places as Park West in Chicago and the Metro Center in Rockford. However, Brown noted that the Chicago Knockers are strictly a class act, not something one usually associates with the sport. "It's as classy a production as mud wrestling gets," she said. Brown said the eight girls in the troupe start their production with a dance number and a bit of modeling, going through two costume changes, before get ting down to the actual wrestling. She 120-pound girls picks up a 180-pound man and gives him an airplane spin with a body slam. That combination of beauty and brawn is the hallmark of the Knockers, said Brown. She said they look for girls who are good stunt people to be in the troupe. Some of the other wrestlers in the group are "Little Miss Vixen," "Firefox," and "Baby Bomber." "They are colorful performers," Brown noted. It's as classy a production as mud wrestling gets. -- Lynn Brown ^ ^ Team co-owner ™ ̂ noted that the girls look like they came from Glamour magazine when they first come out all made up with fancy hair styles. But even though the girls may look beautiful, Brown said they are all business in the ring. "A lot (of people) say it looks real, but it can't be," she said, commenting that most minds are changed when one of the The girls that will grace the grandstand are just one of two Knockers teams that tour the country. The group that will be coming to Woodstock is directed by Tom Sailor, while Brown directs the other. The groups travel the country, touring 11 mon ths of the year and going from California to Florida to Canada. They have appeared on Real People and the Phil Donahue Show, and have been featured in numerous magazines. An interesting pail of tne Knockers' act comes when the girls take on l local celebrity or elected official. "We've wrestled judges, newscasters, TV sportscasters, reporters, mayors," Brown said. She noted that one of the most interesting bouts happened in Ohio when the Knockers wrestled a judge who showed up for his bout in his black robe. Not everyone, however, has been won over by the Knockers' brand of entertainment. ' We've run into some resistance with women's lib and church groups," Brown commented. She said that's understan dable, but she asks that anyone who comes to see the Knockers do so with an open mind. "It's sexy costumes and a Vegas-style presentation," she promised. The Knockers will appear at the fair on August 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the grandstaitd. right on your way On your way around town today look for McDonaid s" We're always close by Just remember, good food and good fun are right on your way every day 130 S.
