TEEN NIGHT-And the young crowd arrived at the Pearl street park to listen and dance to the music of the Remote Control Wednesday night. They also enjoy cold soda pop along with snacks off popcorn, hot dogs, sausage, ice cream and funnel cakes. The McHenry County Farm Bureau states that plans have been prac tically completed for the county wide meeting of farm people in Woodstock, Aug. 14. The program committee consists of Clinton Martin, chairman; Kenneth Cristy and W. A. Herrington. The committee has endeavored for the past six months to obtain Mr. Smith, president of the Illinois Agriculture association, as the main speaker. He is considered as one of the outstanding farm leaders in the United States. Joe Smith has taken over the place known as the Huck garage on Elm street and will conduct a general automotive repair shop, also handling accessories, tires and gas and oil. Mr. Smith is a resident of McHenry and was formerly employed in a garage in Richmond, also teing an employee of Hunter Boat company. FORTY YEARS AGO - (Taken from the files of July 29, 1943). Included in the graduating class at Deming, N. M., on May 29 was Melvin Gladstone, son of the Maurice Gladstones of this city. At that time he received his Silver Wings and his commission as second lieutenant. The class included 121 ypuths who graduated either as pilots, navigators or bombardiers.. Our local young man was among those in the latter at£d category and to our knowledge he is the first McHenry serviceman to be a bombardier. Howard Knox, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Knox, suffered painful injuries when the horses which were pulling the wagon he was driving ran away. Howard fell from the seat and the wagon wheels rolled over his hand and also grazed his neck and chest, causing injuries to his collarbone. Donald D. Dewey, husband of the former Miss Norma Oeffling, left for the Army and is stationed at Fort Custer, Mich., at present. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 31, 1958). Cold weather and rain prevented many of those enrolled in this year's Red Cross water safety program to complete the course and secure certificates, McHenry had one person receive a beginner badge and one in the swimmer class. The north wall of The Tower, Lakemoor restaurant, was destroyed as the result of flames of un determined origin which threatened the entire building. Congratulations to Ed Buss, Jr., our local Ford dealer, on the wonderful display of consistent golf that he employed in winning the McHenry Country club championship. Never just ke^^^^'n away and^it the end of 72 holes of model play, found him with a total of 293 and seven shots HELPING PAWS ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Second place went to Earle Seepe. Others to finish were Vale Adams, third; Paul Overton, fourth; Norm Knaack, fifth and Frank Rourke, sixth. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 3, 1973). Shamrock Beef Cattle Corp. is one of the biggest beef producers in McHenry county, but it won't be sending its cattle to market this week. In fact, it may not be sending any for quite awhile. The reason? Not pride as one would think. The hitch in moving Schiller's cattle is the fact that both sources of 100 percent of his cattle, the Elburn and Hebron packing companies, have both shut down for- an indefinite period. Developers of Port Royal, a 238- acre tract of land east of the river in the Snug Harbor area, has asked for annexation to the city of McHenry. The developers are seeking to have the land annexed and zoned as a planned unit delopment. Mayor Stanek noted that this same proposed subdivision was denied zoning by the county last month. SCHOOL CHILD CARE The McHenry East high school child care classes are now accepting ap plications for their 1963-84 pre-school by Ms. Flo Klemm Do you own a cat or dog? If so, read on in the column and notice the abundance of kittens, cats, dogs for adoption. There are not enough homes to go around. Litters of kitten? and puppies are only 'born to die'. New Elevator For Opera House ' Construction of an elevator has been! completed recently at the historic; Woodstock Opera House to make its- second floor auditorium more ac-; cessible to the public. The project was sponsored by; Woodstock Opera House Community - Center, Inc., the not-for-profit citizens , organization that has achieved the restoration of an improvements to this landmark theatre listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A grant form the Regenstein foun dation funded the construction and installation of the Otis-manufactured elevator. The planning, design and con struction of this important new im provement has taken over two years. The design of this addition is intended to integrate it with the existing 1890's decor of the Opera House. A new box office, modelled after a turn-of-the; century bank teller's station byi historic interior specialist Robert; Furhoff, adjoins the installation. The entrances to the elevator are framed ; with wood moldings milled to duplicate existing ornamental! woodwork throughout the building. From the lobbies the only indications. that the elevator is an innovation are; the modern electronic controls. The elevator rises one floor to the; main level of the 400-seat auditorium.' The management of the Woodstock! Opera House has requested that• patrons requiring use of the elevator! specify main floor seats for any; performance they may be attending.! write to Mrs. Noyes, Mchenry East high school, 1012 Green street, for an application. housebroken, good with children and pets, 312 639-9124.
