-father Hero In £ounty Fire by Angela Burden SHAW MIDI A NiWS SERVICE Barbara Svitak appeared cheerful this morning as she rummaged through charred remains of her family's belongings. She had something to be thankful for, even though her home at 426 N. Seminary, Woodstock, and all its contents were lost in a fire early Monday -- her husband and children were alive. Mrs. Svitak works a night-shift at Valley Hi Nursing Home in Hartland and received a call about 4:30 a.m. from a neighbor telling her to get home because her house was afire. "I grabbed my car keys and realized that I was in no shape to drive," she said. Someone drove her home. "All I could think of was how many of the family were left. It (the drive) was the longest 10 minutes of my life," she said as she sorted through the charred dishes on the front lawn of her burned-out home, while her husband remained under treatment at the hospital. \ "He's a real hero," Woodstock City Fire Chief Phil Parker said of Robert Svitak. According to Parker, Svitak was awakened by the alarm of a smoke detector. „ Svitak grabbed his 5-month-old son, Tommy, from his crib and took him outside. He returned into the burning home and woke his 3-year-old daughter, Sabrina, and managed to get out of the house with her. Leaving both children on the sidewalk outside the home, Svitak returned once more to the house to retrieve his older boy, 5-year-old Scott. "My husband had a hard time finding Scott. He wasn't in his bed," said Mi£. Svitak. She explained that in the emergency, Svitak had forgotten that Scott had crawled into his parents' bed during the night. "By this time it was impossible to see through the smoke, so Bob said he yelled for Scott ... calling his name, and Scojt ran to his dad and they met in the upstairs hallway," Mrs. Svitak said. As Mrs. Svitak arrived home, her husband and family had just been placed in the Woodstock Rescue Squad vehicle. "They were all alive, Thank God." she said. Svitak sustained burns to his left hand, arm and foot, and also a deep gash on his foot, which required stitches. He also suffered smoke inhalation. Name 4-H Delegate Lynette Fettes, Huntley has been selected as Illinois' delegate to the National Junior Horticulture contest in Tulsa, Olka. She and five other 4-H youth participated in the state 4-H Horticulture contest on June 28 at the University of Illinois. Lynette gave a production demonstration titled "Horticulture for the Year 2020" on hydroponic growing. Laura Schlicting, Woodstock, participated in the artistic arrangement competition and Debby Griggs, Sufcy Griggs and Deana Behn, McHenry, participated in the hor­ ticulture judging event. Early detection can make a. dif­ ference! This is the message that the non-profit Portes Cancer Prevention center, located in Chicago, tries to get out to the public. To accomplish this, they are developing a volunteer outreach program aimed at those counties surrounding Chicago. Portes thinks county fairs are one of many places that can be used to educate the public about the value of a comprehensive health screening examination and the early detection of disease. Portes center will have a display, a 2»2-minute audio-visual presentation and brochures at the McHenry County Fair in Woodstock from Aug. 3 through Aug. 7. BLOCK GRANTS The Illinois Department of Com­ merce and Community Affairs' Community Development Assistance program, which recently awarded block grants to 59 small cities throughout Illinois, will open a second round of grants with an additional $8 million provided by the federal Emergency Jobs Bill. The money can be used by local governments for such projects as downtown commercial revitalization, to assist a business in expanding and for physical im­ provements of a city.
