McHenry County residents who play a musical instrument, sing, dance or otherwise dabble on an amateur basis in the entertainment world have a chance to show off their talents in the annual talent competition at the McHenry County Fair. Each summer 40or more amateur enter tainers or groiqK of entertainers sign up for a try at winning the county talent show. This year's show starts at 6 pjn. Friday, Aug. 5, at the fairgrounds' Hansen Pavilion. Each year, the McHenry County Fair talent winner travels to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield to compete. Last year's McHenry County winners, the Amy Bensen Band, went on to capture second place in the talent show at the 1982 state fair. Tbe country-rock band, compos ed of eight Cary-area young people with Amy Bensen as lead singer, was invited back to the state fair this summer to per form at a special luncheon for county fair officials from across the state. Acts in the talent show sometimes follow cycles, and the latest trend, according to talent show chief Bill Tammeus of Woodstock, is country and western music. -The act which was awarded first place at the state fair last year ahead of the Amy Bensen Band wasa bluegrass group, Tam meus said. According to Tammeus, who was (Hie of the original founders of the. McHenry County Fair in the late 1940s, there was a period when the talent show attracted many rock bands, then another stretch of about three years when concert pianists were the winners. Electric organs also were very popular some years ago.- "It seems like we had a dozen or fifteen 12- and 13-year-old boys who played the organ," Tammeus remarked.
