WOODSTOCK -- Anyone who doesn't believe in miracles doesn't know the Jean- nie C. Riley story. Jeannie is more than just a country singer -- she seeks to reach the hearts and souls of those who listen as well as their ears. Harper Valley P.T.A. may have taken her to the top of the music world, but it was her faith that took her to the mountaintop in her life. It was in her hometown of Anson, Texas, that Jeannie first dreamed of being a coun: try music star. She was Jeannie Stephen son then, and she practiced by learning songs off the radio and playing in talent contests. ASK THE TOP DAIRY MEN IN MCHENRY A KANE COUNTIES... Batteries 40% OFF During her senior year in high school, she married her childhood sweetheart and daughter Kim came along two years later. Still, the dream burned bright. It was her husband, Mickey Riley, who finally took the Jjig step -- quitting his job and packing Jeannie and daughter Kim in to a '57 Chevy and moving to Nashville. Once there, he worked in a service station while Jeannie made the rounds on Musip Row with a tape of her singing. A couple of times she thought her dreams were coming true -- but they usually ended in bad business deals and heartbreak. Her big break came while she was working as a secretary for a music publisher and producer Shelby Singleton heard a tape of her voice. Deciding it was perfect for a song he had liked, Harper Valley P.T.A., written by Tom T. Hall, Shelby brought Jeannie into the studio to record. The rest, as they say, is history, with Harper Valley P. T.A. sweeping the nation while selling several million copies. It was a song so powerful that the one record catapulted Jeannie C. Riley -- a 22-year old secretary, to immediate fame. It also cast her in the image of mini-skirts and sassiness as bright lights became a way of life. Jeannie's success soon controlled her, consuming her life and destroying her marriage, but the turning point came in 1972 when Jeannie took a step of faith, deciding that would be the priority of her life and not her career. The choice was not an easy one, but once the commitment was made, she stuck to it through all her ups and downs. First it changed her as an individual who had a new priority in life. Next it changed her as a performer as she began doing gospel songs in her shows and sharing her faith with her audiences. Finally, it brought her family back together as she, ex-husband Mickey and daughter Kim were reunited and re established as a devoted and loving Jeannie C. Riley family. A wife and mother in addition to her role as a country music superstar, Jeannie en joys all her roles and balances than well. Harper Valley P. T.A. may have been what catapulted Jeannie to the top--but it's not what keeps her there. That honor belongs to her faith and her family. Recently, Jeannie has released both an album and a book celebrating her hew life. The book, titled From Harper Valley to the Mountaintop. is her autobiography and tells her life story in detail. The album, with the same title, is filled with gospel songs and country songs. Jeannie's love and allegiance to country music shines through in the music while ho* faith and new life shine through on the lyrics. It is an album filled with hope and good music but most of all it is filled with the exuberance of the lady who has climbed from Harper Valley to the mountaintop. Jeannie C. Riley will appear at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the McHenry County Fair. CLIP THIS COUPON AND SAVE!
