Richmond Day At Museum Sunday, Aug. 14, from 1:30 to 4:30 will be Richmond day at the McHenry County Historical museum in Union. The Sunday family activities center on the history of the Village of Rich mond and her citizens. Richmond, as presented in the 1885 History of McHenry County, was well adapted to farming and grazing, was thrifty and prosperous, and honored William A. McConnell as the first settler in 1837. Seven years later, the Village of Richmond was laid out by Charles Cotting and Theodore Purdy. According to local lore, when the mill was raised in town in 1844, it was proposed that whoever climbed to the top of the building would have the privilege of naming the village. When Isaac M. Reed accomplished the feat, he gave it the name Richmond after a village in Vermont that he knew as a child. The township, first called Montelona; was also changed to Rich mond. To recapture the flavor of that earlier history, special exhibits of area artifacts and numerous old photographs will be on loan for the afternoon. From the Speaker family come pictures of the old mill; resident Tom Bower will have his collection of Main street and mHl pictures; materials on Dr. Sanford Fillmore Bennett, Richmond's first village president and author 5af the bymL Sweet By and By? will also be on hand as well as a painting collection of Richmond scenes from local artist and map maker Gene Deredyn. Besides this, materials from such first Richmond settlers as the Noyce and Coquillette families will be exhibited. Museum visitors and. those in terested in learning more about the history of this area of McHenry county will have the opportunity to see what will probably be the largest one time showing of Richmond area historic sights. For Village of Richmond and Rich mond township residents, the museum will be open free. Those wishing to exhibit personal collections that afternoon should contact Irene Borre 678-6921. This special Aug. 14 Richmond day is part of the McHenry County Historical society's ongoing 20th anniversary celebration. The society's intention is to promote county-wide use of this museum and encourage an interest in local history. An in vestigation of some of these advertisements was conducted by the American Council of Science and Health. Of particular interest were the claims made for breast and bust developers. One ad claimed that you could "enlarge your bosom three full cup sizes in only seven days. " According to the ad, "Big Bosom Pill" was developed "after 20 years of extensive scientific and medical technology and a quarter century of in-, terplanetary and computer experience." The ad - said-and, again this is a direct quote-"If we helped put a man on the moon, we surely can put a big beautiful bosom on a deserving lady." You will understand why the council was disturbed by such claims if you know that the breasts are com posed almost entirely of fat; so the only way to increase breast size is to gain weight. And that's what the typical bust developing method turned out to be-a program of weight gain- -all over. For example, one product was dietary supplement which was to be mixed in a blender with six ounces of milk, a teaspoon, of safflower oil, ice cubes and a fruit of your choice. You are told you may also add a raw egg or ice cream. You are supposed to drink this concoction twice a day. The American Council on Science and Health determined that this drink --even without the egg or ice cream-would add more than 500 calories a day to your diet. At this rate you'll find yourself gaining more than a pound a week. The Council also is Your Homo HOW 10 SUBSCRIBE 10 THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER The (McHenry Ploindealer 3812 W. The book is only 64 pages long, and the method for in creasing your height includes the power of positive thinking, correct posture , stretching exercises and basic nutrition. The book, which sells for $20.95 by the way, also suggests wearing suits with vertical stripes and higher- heeled shoes. It further recommends an Afro hairstyle rather than the flatter styles. You may wonder, if the products' are fraudulent, why do magazines accept their advertising? There are a variety of reasons. One reputable magazine told the council that, before they accept an ad, they ask for a list of ingredients and a sample of the product. They have a staff physician who tests the product to make sure the product will not burn or poison users, but they do not test its effectiveness. Some magazines will run any ad that offers a money-back guarantee. Most magazines , though, admit that they accept these ads because they need the money. The state health department hopes you will remember the council's findings any time you are tempted to order a "miraculous" cure for anything that is advertised in the back pages of magazines or in nationally-distributed weekly newspapers.
