The latest film to be recreated on TV is "Diner," the bittersweet movie about five young men in 1959 on the verge x>f adulthood. CBS airs a pilot on Monday, Aug. 15., with an eye on a midseason replacement. The pilot stars Paul Reiser, who reprises his role of Modell from the film, James Spader (Fenwick), Mike Binder (Eddie), Max Cantor (Shrevie) and Michael Mad- sen (Boogie). Barry Levinson, who wrote and directed the film, is the TV show's co-executive .producer. The tendency to create TV shows based on motion pic­ tures goes back to the early days of TV. In the 1950s and '60s. several of TV's more memorable series were based on screen movies -- "Naked City," "Please Don't Eat the Daisies," "No Time for Sergeants, "The Virginian," "Gidget," "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" and "Mr. Roberts." In the last few years, the trend seems to be accelera­ ting. in their quest for ratings, network execs are scurrying more than ever to go for the surefire, immediately grasped concept. What bettec vehicle than a motion picture whose plot and characters are already known to millions? - But unlike the old days, for the most part, these big-to- small screen transfers haven't worked. Who out there can truly savor fond memories of the video versions of "Casablanca," "Semi-Tough," "Opera­ tion Petticoat" "Paper Moon" "Breaking Away," "Serpico," "Delta House," (based on "Animal House") "How the West Was Won," "Planet of the Apes" and "Matt Helm"? All were successful movies that became TV flops of the '70s and '80s. Notable exceptions were "M*A*S*H" -- perhaps the sole case where the TV show was more popular than its celluloid inspiration -- and, to a lesser degree, "Private Benjamin," "Paper Chase" and "Fame." The nets don't give up. "Diner" keeps the cycle going and in the fall, ABC offers its version of "Hotel," originally a novel by Arthur Hailey and later a movie. Now word is out that "Blue Thunder," the action-adventure film about police helicopters, is being readied as a TV series.
