What ever, there's a striking similarity between the British settlers in Africa depicted in Elspeth Huxley's "The Flame Trees of Thika" and American settlers who opened this country's Western frontier. Adapted from Ms. Huxley's memoir of her own childhood in pre-World War I Africa, a seven-part dramatization of "The Flame Trees of Thika" encores on Mobil Masterpiece Theatre on PBS beginning Sunday evening. Aug. 14. (Please check local listings for time.) It's the story of the Grant family -- Robin (David Robb), his wife. Tilly (Hayley Mills) and their daughter Elspeth (14- year-old Holly Aird) -- who leave their secure London home to become coffee planters in the almost-unexplored region south of Nairobi in what's now Kenya. 4 If their experiences on the African frontier seem familiar, it's because they closely resemble experiences of American homesteaders in the unsettled Old West. In Africa, the Grant family encountered wildlife and tribes in this'country who were similar to the Masai and Kikuyu tribes. American settlers plodded their way westward in covered wagons, as did the Grants while traveling to Thika in a battered old wagon drawn by oxen and led by an African guide. © 1M3 Computog BUSINESS DIRECTORY V* Boys WEAR ' i245n.QBeenst. mchency ̂ 385-6172 SIZES 4-20 LEE & BAY ELECTRIC Featuring A Full Line Off Frigidaire, Whirlpopl, Hotpoint, Appliance* & Eureka Vacuums 1005 N.
