It's even rarer when that performer is the newest breed of soap stars, the show-business celebrity. "I've watched 'Ryan's Hope' since day one," says Gloria DeHaven, the film star of the '40s and '50s, who has joined the show in the key role of Bess Shel by. the mother of Jillian Colleridge (Nancy Addison). Jillian was born out of wedlock and raised by her father's family. "I'm so excited about it," says Miss DeHaven, a perky 58-year-old, "it's like a new beginning. You should krv>w that while my parents were well-known actors and vaudevillians as Mr. and Mrs. Carter DeHaven, my father's name, which he changed legally before I was born, was Frances O'Callahan. "So 'Ryan's Hope,' a show about an Irish family, was something I took to immediately. And Helen Gallagher (who plays matriarch Maeve Ryan) is an old theater friend." Miss DeHaven, who was born in the proverbial trunk, made her screen debut at age 9 in Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times." She starred in 40 movies, most of which were musi cals. One, "Two Girls and a Sailor," hurled Miss Gloria DeHaven DeHaven and co-stars Van Johnson and June Allyson to stardom. Just prior to joing 'RH,' Miss DeHaven did a toqr with Johnson, her one-time leading man (she calls him "Vanny") in a revival of "No, No Nanette." "In the last few yeare in roles on nighttime TV, I've always played rich social ites or movie star-types. So Bess is quite a stretch for me. She's tacky -- the kind of lady who sits around with a bottle of beer wearing quite a lot of plas tic jewelry." Bess is also the mother of another daughter, Maggie, who ABC officially describes only as "a spitfire." Miss DeHaven has been married four times and is the mother of four children, ages 21-37. She's particu larly proud of her actor son, Harry, 27, who under the stage name of Richard DeHaven, is following the family tradition. ©ttttCompuioo
