To make the team you've got to train hard and play hard. But all the excitement of winning is lost when players are needlessly-injured. Dr. Richard Simeone, senior attending oral sur geon at Washington Hospi tal Center explain? that many sports-related injuries are avoidable. " Many ardent sports players forget rule number one before leaving the locker room -- wearing adequate facial pro tection." Word to the wise - To prevent injuries such as knocked-out teeth, bro ken jaws and lacerations, the American Association or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) sug gests that athletes always wear protective facial gear -- whether you are playing a friendly game or highly competitive sport. "what players must real ize is that wearing facial masks and mouth guards is as important to avoid inju ries as stretching their mus cles is," said Dr. Simeone, who has worked with the Washington Redskins foot ball team for nine years. "Protective facial gear should be part of their nor mal playing equipment." AAOMS members rec ommend use of custom-fit ted mouth guards, helmets and facial masks to avoid injury to mouths and faces such as knocked-out teeth, nasal fractures, upper and lower jaw fractures, and woundsf to the surrounding soft tissues. Joy, Jr., professor and head of oral and maxillofa cial surgery at the Medical School of Georgia suggests the following treatment: • For knocked-out teeth, clean off the teeth that have been knocked out, and quickly place them in their sockets. If this is impossible, place teeth in a glass of ice water with a pinch of salt or milk until a specialist can be reached. • For an injured jaw, make a temporary splint, then with teeth together place a towel or bandage around the jaw tying it at the top of the head. • For facial bleeding, apply pressure directly on the wound. "In many cases, a knocked-out tooth can be salvaged if quick action is taken and these simple pro cedures followed," says Dr. Joy. The AAOMS advises that an oral and maxillofa cial surgeon should be seen when a dentofacial injury occurs. If a specialist is unavailable, go to a hospital emergency room as soon as possible. "Most emergency rooms have an oral and maxillofa cial surgeon on call at all times who is trained to rec ognize and treat all facial injuries -- some which might go unnoticed," explains Dr. Joy. Persons with protruding and decayed teeth, and those with partial and full dentures are at greater risk for suffering a sports-re lated dental or facial acci dent. See dentist first Before participating in any sports activity, the AAOm - recommends a dental c» Vup to have missing filh. 'oose den tures or Ul-fiiung partial dentures corrected. The best advice' to avoid dentofacial accidents is to use caution and protection. Many sports-related inju ries are preventable -- don't let one happen to you.
