The site was selected after a detailed analysis of 27 different criteria applied to available parcels of laftd within McHenry County. These criteria were presented to the County BoaFd Health and AgrieUlturd Committee. We want to set the record straight: How Large Will the Landfill be? The entire site encompasses 118 acres, of which 20 acres will be used initially for dis posal operations; additional acreage will be used in phases. What Kinds of Waste Will be Received? The facility will receive domestic, com mercial, municipal and general refuse. Special wastes--including septic wastes-- will not be received unless spe cif cally approved by the McHenry Clijnty Health Department and other ap propriate authorities. tazardous wastes will be received, f * ; I >, is the Anticipated Life of tH$ Facility? Approximately 25 years. Areas Will be Served? Al|< f McHenry County. Approximately t) 90 per cent of all waste generated inii cHenry County--some 147,000 tons yegr---now is disposed of outside the ity. We estimate that only about 10 per erf the wastes received would be from the county. The Seneca Township site is far superior to the others with respfect to jts geology, hydrogeology, traffic patterns and com patibility with the surrounding area. * -J • T What Environmental Safe guards Will be Installed? Environmental safeguaitls are provided by the rules and regulations promulgated by the state and federal environmental protection agencies. Every landfill devel oped within the state of Illinois is required to install, maintain and monitor environ mental protection systems in accordance with these regulations, ̂ addition, the McHenry County Health Department plays an integral role inthe monitoring of any facility located withlnits jurisdiction. Waste Management re$kjpzes and accepts its responsibility*) these govern mental authorities and tethe people of McHenry County for the operation of an environmentally sound facility, as we have done in other communities. IW'<I • 'T • . ' How Many Hours Will the Facility be Open? Nine hours per day, Monday through Fri day, and a half-day on Saturday. The facil ity will not be open at night or on Sunday. Have You Made Any Provisions for Recycling? We support the McHenry County Defenders' objectives of separating reclaimable materials at their source, rather than at the sanitary landfill, materials which cannot be reclaim course, must be disposed of property. The company has set aside two acres at the proposed site for use by interested parties for recycling purposes. We will have to control these activities, of course, so that they don't interfere with disposal operations. What About Your Company's 'Track Record'? Contrary to published statements, our company's track record is excellent. For example, between June, 1979 and June, 1982, the Company's sanitary landfills in the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency's Northern Region were inspected more than twice as often as other land fills and had less than one-quarter of the number of "points" deducted by IEPA in- It has also been said, erroneously, that our company is not interested in recycling or incineration. The facts are that Waste Management currently operates two re source recovery plants and is building a third and that our company has invested millions of dollars in incineration technology. The proper management of wastes is our business, and we are proud of our perfor mance in delivering this important service to homes, business and industry. ' V
