Crowd Gets Good Look At McHenry Football Squads DICK RABBITT The Annual McHenry High Booster Club's Introduction was successful for several reasons. First a nice crowd was on hand on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. More important, _ Coach Joe Schlender was most pleased with the performance of his "Fighting Warriors." Castin' Away Worming Is Effective ways W<* RONSHEARER Working the plektic worm is one of the most \ fascinating of fishing w> black bass, forming requires a lot of -finesse, but it's effective. This is far my favorite way of In fact there will be more bass caught by throwing a plastic worm wan on any other lure. You feel like you're tricking a bass when you get him to hit a worm. There are many ways to rig a worm for bassin , but the most useful is probably the popular "Texas rig." This is so weedless that you can throw it anywh-r*. This rig is made by pushing the book into the head of the worm and back out again within leas than half an inch. Slide the head of the worm up over the eye of the hook, then bury the point of the hook bade into the worm so me body will lie straight. There are several techniques to use in working the worm. One is to drag it slowly along the bottom. Another is to hop it. When fishing edges, I like to drag the worm, and when it falls t's not touching , hold the rod still and off the break of the ledge, the fish tend to hit it there. The best way to tell a beginner to fish a worm is simply to move it slowly with a lifting of the rod, keeping the lure touching something down below. If any! let it fafi to bottom. Stay alert and keep the rod at about 45-degree angle as much as you can. When a fish hits the worm -- you should feel him bump it -- lower the rod, take up any siacfc line you may have, and then sAap back really hard and quick with the wrists. As soon as you know you've got a strike, Jerk it as hard as you can. Remember, you've got to pull the hook through the worm as well as sticking the bass. For a long time, fishermen thought you should wait a while after a fish takes the worm. Don't do this. Set the hook as soon as you can after you feel the take. Roa Sheerer to the Red Man Fisherman three-time national champion and world record holder for the largest daily tournament catch. The 50 plus freshmen squad had the field from noon to l p.m. and coaches Bruce Montressor and Jerry Rankin were happy in what they observed. A lot of numbers and some good talent was on the field. The varsity played fotp* quarters of football, with officials, under game conditions, but without kickoffs and punts. v Schlender was pleased with the squad's performance. "They hit hard, we didn't have too many penalties and I believe they are. in shape." The first stringers played the the second stringers during the first half of play.
