\ Burns-recognize and treat the injury PACK 7 - IM.AINDHAIKR - FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER t, 1M3 Burn* are one of the most devastating injuries that can be suffered. Alone with the extreme pain and long healing process involved with severe bums, psychological stress is alio a factor, especially when there is a large amount of scarring. There are basically four types of burns: thermal, chemical, electrical and radiation. There are also different severity levels, commonly called firrt, second superf redden degree. First degree burns are rficial. They cause a _ of the skin and are very painful. These burns, will heal on their scarring. A good first degree burn is sunburn. , Second degree burns involve a deeper layer of damage. Along with deep redness, blisters also occur. Second degree burns will also heal on their own, but large areas of second degree burns are serious. Third degree burns are the most serious. These burns destroy the skin and may extend all the way down to the fat, muscle and even bone. The appearance of third degree buns is often black, due to charring of the skin, or white, due to the destruction of blood vessels within the skin. The sldn will appear dry and leathery. The burned areas are seldom painful bec.ause of the destruction of nerve endings in the skin. These burns require sursical care in the form of skin grafting. of Different types require .different treatment. Therma require rapid cooling, burns of urns usually n with cool water . This does two things: it alleviates the pain and ' further tissue damage, burns require rapid with large amounts of water to wash the chemical off the sldn or out of the eyes, usually for IS minutes. All clothing affected by the chemical should be removed. Electrical burns are i because most of the inside the body. This is you can't see. Usually electrical burns there are two visible wounds, one is where the electricity entered the body and >dy. Cove injury is I namagp illy with one where it left the body. Cover Johnsburg Rescue Squad these and all burns with clean dressings after the appropriate treatment. They learn that a job, unlike a ball game, doesn't ^ get called off because of bad weather. And they learn that most wonderful feeling - the satisfaction of a job well done. And then there's the satisfaction of earning your own money-receiving a check for doing the job the best possible way. If you know a young person who might like to try being a carrier for the PRO-DEL SYSTEM - delivering just two days per week (CITIZEN on Wednesday after school and the SATURDAY EXTRA on Saturday morning) have them call or fill out an application.
